Controversy Ignites Over Social Media Post
Delta Air Lines has come under intense scrutiny following a controversial social media post involving the Palestinian flag. The issue began when Delta, one of the United States’ major airlines, deleted a tweet that seemed to endorse a misleading claim about its flight attendants wearing “Hamas badges.”
An X user had tweeted, “Since 2001 we take our shoes off in every airport because a terrorist attack on US soil. Now imagine getting into a Delta flight and seeing workers with Hamas badges in the air. What do you do?”
Delta’s initial response and retraction
Delta Air Lines’ X account responded, “I hear you as I’d be terrified as well, personally. Our employees reflect our culture and we do not take it lightly when our policy is not being followed.” This response was quickly deleted.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim advocacy organization in the US, criticized Delta for the “racist anti-Palestinian” tweet and demanded an apology. Edward Ahmed Mitchell, CAIR National Deputy Director, stated, “Whether this racist post on Delta’s X account was approved or unauthorized, Delta must apologize and take steps to educate its employees about this type of dangerous anti-Palestinian racism. Bigotry against Palestinian-Americans is absolutely out of control in workplaces and at schools – and it must stop.”
Delta’s apology and policy change
In response to the backlash, Delta issued an apology on X, stating, “We strive for an environment of inclusivity and respect for all. The employee responsible no longer supports Delta’s social channels. We apologize for this hurtful post.”
According to CBS News, the two Delta employees wearing the Palestinian flag pins will continue to work for the airline, as it was in compliance with its uniform policy. Moving forward, Delta has revised its policy, stating that employees will only be permitted to wear US flags on their uniforms. “Previously, pins representing countries/nationalities of the world had been permitted,” Delta noted. The airline emphasized its commitment to “a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for all,” and reiterated its pride in its diverse employee and customer base.
Delta has stated its intention to ensure inclusivity and prevent such incidents from recurring. The airline aims to connect the world and provide a premium experience while maintaining respect for all its employees and passengers.
