Former Maryland teacher sentenced to 30 years for having sex with teen student

Former educator pleads guilty to multiple counts of sexual offenses

A former teacher from Maryland has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of having sexual relations with a teenage student. According to reports from Fox 5 DC, Melissa Curtis, 32, will serve 30 years in prison with all but 12 months suspended. Upon her release, she will also face five years of supervised probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

Details of the abuse

The abuse took place between January and May of 2015 in Montgomery County, Maryland. Curtis engaged in sexual acts with an eighth-grade student in her vehicle and at various residences in the area. During their encounters, she reportedly provided the teen with alcohol and marijuana, and the abuse occurred more than 20 times.

At the time, Curtis was a teacher who had been employed for two years, including a stint at Lakelands Park Middle School. Prosecutors revealed that the student had volunteered for an after-school program that Curtis ran, which often left them alone together.

Investigation and charges

According to Fox 5 DC, Curtis turned herself in to the police on November 7, 2023, following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. She was charged with multiple counts of sexual offenses, including third- and fourth-degree sexual offenses.

Curtis, who had been teaching for approximately two years at the time, was in charge of an after-school program where the student volunteered. Prosecutors noted that the two were often left alone together during this period.

Legal proceedings and sentencing

Police launched their investigation in October 2023, when the victim, now an adult, came forward with allegations. Curtis pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sexual offenses on June 20, 2024, admitting to her involvement in the incidents.

As part of her sentencing, Curtis will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years. Additionally, as a condition of her probation, she will not be allowed to have unsupervised contact with minors, except for her children.

This case highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of the time that has passed. The legal outcome provides a reminder of the serious consequences for those in positions of trust who engage in abusive behavior.
