Historic milestone in NASCAR: Four female drivers finish in top 10

NASCAR witnessed a historic moment on Sunday in the ARCA Menards Series as four female drivers secured top-10 finishes, with two earning podium spots. The race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds saw Isabella Robusto and Taylor Reimer finish in second and third place, marking the highest-ever finishes for women in the series.

Impressive performances by female drivers

Due to necessary repairs on Saturday, Robusto couldn’t post a qualifying time and started the race from 19th place, only to charge through the field impressively. Her participation in the race was a last-minute decision, as she stepped in for Brent Crews, who had to withdraw due to a schedule change in the zMax Cars Tour. This led Robusto to take the wheel of the No. 2 Venturini Motorsports Toyota.

Reflecting on her achievement, Robusto said, “Wish we could’ve gotten up front one more spot. But overall, good day. Learned a lot so looking forward to the next one at Kansas.”

Taylor Reimer, who started in third, held her position to secure a podium finish. Meanwhile, Toni Breidinger and Amber Balcaen made their mark by finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, out of a 20-car field.

William Sawalich dominates the race

While the women drivers made history, William Sawalich took the checkered flag, leading every lap of the race. After a late caution sent the race into a one-lap overtime sprint, Sawalich maintained his lead in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, securing his first win on a dirt track. The 17-year-old expressed his excitement, saying, “The only thing I’ve been told about dirt racing is more throttle means more turn. That’s all I was trying to do, trying to gas it up and getting the rear to turn.”

Sawalich’s victory marked Joe Gibbs Racing’s eighth consecutive win in the series, solidifying the team’s dominance. As NASCAR continues to evolve, the achievements of these female drivers signal a new era for diversity and competition in the sport.
