Iowa Teen Suffers Kidney Failure and Temporary Loss of Speech After Spider Bite

Quick Summary

A 16-year-old Iowa teen, Noah Johnson, suffered kidney failure and temporary loss of speech after a spider bite led to a severe infection. After weeks in the ICU, emergency surgery, and a near-death scare, he’s now on the road to recovery with physical therapy. His case highlights how serious complications can arise from even routine injuries when infections or medication reactions occur.

How a routine summer job turned into a life-threatening ordeal

What began as an ordinary summer job for 16-year-old Noah Johnson from Slater, Iowa, quickly spiraled into a terrifying medical emergency. Bitten by a spider while working for his brother’s fence-building company, the teenager developed a serious infection that led to kidney failure, significant weight loss, and the temporary loss of his ability to speak. His experience is a chilling reminder of how quickly minor injuries can escalate—and why early, effective medical intervention is crucial.

What happened to Noah Johnson?

On June 18, while working outdoors, Noah felt a sting on his lower back. He later told his mother, Brandy Johnson, that it felt like something had crawled on him and then bit him. Initially, the family didn’t panic. Brandy advised him to monitor the bite and report any changes. But within days, the site had swollen and developed two black puncture marks, causing intense pain that made sitting nearly impossible.

Despite visiting urgent care and being assured that Iowa spiders aren’t deadly, Noah’s condition rapidly worsened. He was prescribed antibiotics and tested for MRSA, a dangerous and antibiotic-resistant staph infection. But the medication failed to contain the spreading infection.

Why did the spider bite cause such a severe reaction?

Spider bites rarely result in life-threatening complications. However, complications can arise due to:

  • Secondary bacterial infections: As in Noah’s case, even a non-venomous bite can allow dangerous bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
  • Delayed medical intervention: Multiple doctor visits and delays in hospitalization gave the infection time to escalate.
  • Adverse reactions to medication: A kidney biopsy later revealed Noah had a severe allergic reaction to a painkiller prescribed early in his treatment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while spider bites are usually not dangerous, they should be closely monitored. A red flag is when symptoms escalate rapidly despite standard treatment—a sign that something more serious may be at play.

How did his condition progress in the hospital?

On June 23, Brandy took Noah to urgent care. After more failed treatments and rising fever, he was rushed to the Mary Greeley Medical Center, where emergency surgery was performed to remove the infected tissue. But just 24 hours later, Noah’s kidneys began to fail. He was transferred to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and placed in the Pediatric ICU.

A colonoscopy showed additional infection in his intestines, further complicating treatment. Doctors struggled to stabilize him. His aunt, Chastity Schonhorst, said that each time they believed he might improve, his condition deteriorated again.

Noah, once a strong and athletic teen who played baseball and lifted weights for hours, lost 15 kilograms during his stay. On July 16, he told his mother he feared he was dying—a moment Brandy later described as devastating.

How did Noah recover?

Brandy, determined to keep hope alive, insisted that only positive things be said around Noah. In a last-ditch effort to boost his spirits, she arranged to take him outdoors in a wheelchair for some fresh air and sunlight. That decision proved to be a turning point. The very next day, his vitals began to improve.

He was removed from ICU in mid-July, and after five weeks of hospitalization, Noah was finally discharged on July 21. While his kidneys began functioning again, his speech remained limited, and he now requires physical therapy.

What support has the family received?

The Johnson family has received an outpouring of support from the local community. Friends’ families organized a GoFundMe campaign to assist with Noah’s medical expenses. As of the latest update, the fundraiser has drawn donations from across Iowa and beyond.

This case highlights the financial and emotional burden that sudden medical crises can place on families. It also raises questions about antibiotic resistance and the need for better awareness around post-bite care.

Why this story matters

Noah Johnson’s experience underscores how even a simple bug bite can morph into a critical situation. It also sheds light on:

  • The importance of acting quickly when symptoms worsen.
  • The risks of allergic reactions to common medications.
  • The power of emotional resilience and family support in recovery.

As climate change alters insect behavior and expands their habitats, the risk of interactions between humans and venomous or infectious species is increasing, even in places previously considered low-risk, like Iowa.
