In a shocking development, a district judge in Kentucky was fatally shot within the sanctity of his chambers on Thursday afternoon. The incident was confirmed by Governor Andy Beshear, who expressed his sorrow on social media.
“Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon,” the governor shared on X. “There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.”

The victim, identified as Judge Kevin R. Mullins, 54, was killed at the Letcher County courthouse in Whitesburg, located approximately 200 miles southeast of Louisville. Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler corroborated the information.
Kentucky State Police have taken a suspect into custody, though the motive remains unclear. State Trooper Matt Gayheart stated that it is “early in the investigation” and authorities are actively “trying to piece together” evidence and information.
