The accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson faces a highly charged trial, sparking public debate and protests.

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in a Manhattan courtroom on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder and terrorism. His arraignment has further inflamed an already polarized public, with supporters and critics gathering outside the courthouse.

Mangione was seen smiling as he entered the courtroom, wearing a white shirt and red sweater, flanked by his legal team. The murder of Thompson on Dec. 4 outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan has drawn national attention, partly due to Mangione’s rising online popularity as a figure of protest against the health insurance industry.

Details of the arrest

Following a five-day manhunt, Luigi Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a tip led authorities to his location. Police reportedly recovered a 3D-printed gun and a fake ID that allegedly matched evidence found at the crime scene, including fingerprints and shell casings.

Mangione was extradited to New York City, arriving to significant media attention as Mayor Eric Adams greeted law enforcement officials at the Wall Street heliport. This move was criticized by Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who accused Adams of politicizing the case.

“What was the New York City mayor doing at this press conference? That is utterly political,” she said in court. She also expressed concerns about Mangione’s ability to receive a fair trial, describing her client as being treated like a “human spectacle.”

Supporters rally behind Mangione

Outside the courthouse, protesters carried signs reading “Free Luigi” and “Health Insurance Practices Terrorize People,” highlighting Mangione’s status as a symbolic figure for those disillusioned with the healthcare system. Similar demonstrations took place in Pennsylvania ahead of his extradition, where supporters decried the terrorism charges against him as excessive.

Thompson’s killing has exposed a growing resentment among some Americans toward the health insurance industry. While authorities allege Mangione acted alone, his case has become a flashpoint for debates about corporate accountability and systemic inequality.

The charges and potential outcomes

Luigi Mangione faces 11 criminal counts, including state charges of murder and terrorism and federal charges that could lead to the death penalty. If convicted on state charges, the maximum sentence would be life in prison without parole.

In court, Judge Valerie Figaro assured Mangione’s defense team that the jury selection process would be handled carefully to ensure a fair trial.

Mangione’s subdued court demeanor

Unlike his previous court appearances, where he attempted to make public statements, Luigi Mangione remained silent during Monday’s proceedings. This marks a notable shift from his earlier efforts to draw attention to his case.

He is currently being held in a federal detention center in Brooklyn, where he shares a facility with high-profile inmates, including music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and cryptocurrency entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried.

Public response

The trial is expected to be one of the most contentious in recent years, with Mangione’s supporters framing him as a symbol of frustration with corporate greed and systemic inequities, while critics see his actions as a dangerous escalation of anti-corporate sentiment.

For now, the nation watches as the legal proceedings unfold, with the outcome likely to reverberate far beyond the walls of the courtroom.
