Melania Trump backs bill to combat deepfake revenge porn in rare public appearance

In her first solo public engagement since returning to the White House, First Lady Melania Trump has thrown her support behind the Take It Down Act, a legislative measure aimed at criminalizing the distribution of nonconsensual sexual imagery, including deepfake pornography.

Appearing at a Capitol Hill roundtable discussion, Melania emphasized the urgency of addressing AI-driven privacy breaches, particularly their impact on young women.

“In today’s AI-driven world, the threat of privacy breaches is alarming and high,” she told the panel, sitting alongside two teenage victims of deepfake porn. “It’s heartbreaking to witness young teens, especially girls, grappling with the overwhelming challenges posed by malicious online content.”

She urged lawmakers to rally behind the legislation, adding: “Addressing this issue is essential for fostering a safe and supportive environment for our young people. I hope today’s roundtable builds awareness of the harm caused by nonconsensual intimate imagery and eventually the approval of the Take It Down Act in Congress.”

What is the Take It Down Act?

Introduced by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, the Take It Down Act seeks to hold social media platforms and websites accountable by requiring them to swiftly remove non-consensual intimate images—including AI-generated pornography—once victims report them.

While the bill has passed the U.S. Senate, it has yet to clear the House of Representatives, where it faces political hurdles.

Melania calls out Democrats for delays

In a pointed remark during the discussion, the First Lady criticized Democrats for not prioritizing the bill’s passage. “I expected to see more Democrat leaders with us here today to address this serious issue,” she said. “Surely as adults, we can prioritize American children ahead of partisan politics.”

She underscored the broader need for online protections, stating, “In an era where digital interactions are integral to daily life, we must safeguard children from mean-spirited and hurtful online behavior.”

Melania’s renewed public presence and strong stance on online safety mark a significant moment in the ongoing debate over AI’s role in digital exploitation. Her advocacy may add pressure on lawmakers to advance the bill, making it a rare bipartisan priority in an otherwise divided Congress.
