FDA classifies recall as second-highest risk level

A nationwide recall has been issued for over 2 million cases of MadeGood granola bars following concerns over potential metal contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized the recall under “Class II,” indicating a risk of temporary or medically reversible health effects.

Granola bars recall: Key details

Chicago-based Riverside Natural Foods Inc., the parent company of MadeGood, voluntarily recalled specific batches of its granola bars produced between January and November 2024. The recall follows seven consumer complaints regarding metal fragments found in the bars, despite the company selling hundreds of millions of units.

The company stated that the recall was initiated “due to the potential presence of a piece of metal in the product, which, if consumed, may result in a safety hazard,” according to USA Today.

Nature of contamination

MadeGood described the contamination as “a small, flat brush bristle” and assured consumers that its presence in products remains highly unlikely.

On February 11, the FDA raised the recall’s risk classification to Class II, warning that the consumption of affected products could lead to “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, though the likelihood of serious health risks remains low.”

Following an internal investigation, Riverside Natural Foods identified the contamination source within the manufacturing process. “The company has remediated the issue and tested new processes to ensure that any future risk is fully mitigated,” the company confirmed in a statement.

Affected granola bar varieties

The following MadeGood granola bars, manufactured between January and November 2024, are subject to the recall:

  • Chocolate Chip Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Banana Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Drizzled Birthday Cake Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Drizzled Cookie Crumble Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Drizzled Vanilla Granola Bars
  • Mixed Berry Granola Bars
  • Strawberry Granola Bars
  • Cookie & Creme Granola Bars

These products were distributed across the United States, Canada, and other international markets.

Company response and consumer guidance

In December, MadeGood assured customers that the issue had been resolved in collaboration with retailers, ensuring that recalled bars were removed from store shelves. “We have addressed the source of the issue and are conducting the voluntary recall with the knowledge of regulatory authorities,” the company stated.

Customers who have purchased the affected granola bars are eligible for a full refund. “Consumers are encouraged to check their products against the recall list and return any impacted items to the place of purchase for a refund,” MadeGood confirmed.

For further inquiries, consumers can contact the MadeGood Consumer Hotline at 855-215-5695, available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
