Son sentenced after mother’s tragic death
An 80-year-old disabled mother from Ohio died after being left on the floor for ten days by her son following a fall inside their shared home.
Gayle Gamel passed away in the hospital after paramedics were eventually called to her residence in Colerain Township, Cincinnati. Her son, Michael Gamel, 48, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in November 2024, following her death in 2021.
Despite his guilty plea, a judge opted not to impose a prison sentence during his sentencing on Tuesday. Instead, Gamel was placed on probation for five years and ordered to undergo treatment at the River City Correctional Center, though the nature of his treatment remains undisclosed, according to WXIX.
Emergency response and investigation
Emergency teams responded to the home on December 30, 2021, initially believing Gayle had suffered a stroke. However, an investigation later determined that she had fallen from a chair and remained on the floor for over a week while her son failed to assist her.
Detectives revealed that Michael Gamel, who had been providing what they described as “basic care” for his mother, did not attempt to help her up. Instead, he allowed her to remain on the ground until he eventually called emergency services. Tragically, she died in the hospital the following day.
Legal proceedings and sentencing
Following his arrest, Gamel admitted to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. While prosecutors sought justice for Gayle’s neglect, the court’s decision to impose probation rather than incarceration has sparked debate.
Gayle Gamel, who was widowed at the time of her death, was described in her obituary as a “loving wife of the late John S. Gamel.”

The sentencing coincides with another tragic case involving an elderly couple in Tennessee. Authorities in Portland, Tennessee, have charged 81-year-old Joseph Scrofne with first-degree murder after he allegedly strangled his wife, Linda Scrofne, 80, in their home.
According to police reports, Joseph claimed he had done “his family a favor.” Officers discovered Linda’s body with bruising around her neck and blood on the side of her face. The next day, Joseph allegedly called 911 expressing suicidal thoughts, and later admitted to using a rope to strangle his wife, stating that “she was crazy.”
Both cases highlight the vulnerability of elderly individuals and the tragic consequences of neglect and domestic violence.
