A mysterious and disturbing phenomenon is unfolding in the quiet neighborhoods of Richmond, California, where residents have been witness to what some describe as birds seemingly “exploding” in mid-air, leaving the community both alarmed and perplexed.
Community on edge as birds mysteriously die on power lines
Residents report finding multiple dead birds scattered across their yards, with security camera footage capturing the unsettling moments when birds perched on power lines suddenly fall after loud popping sounds. The incidents have created growing concern among locals, who have documented at least 13 birds meeting this bizarre fate.
“So when they land and it happens, they just quickly explode and it’s violent,” Bolling told ABC San Francisco station KGO-TV.
The wildlife mystery began several months ago when the first birds turned up dead, according to residents. As casualties have mounted, theories have ranged from electrocution by power lines to more sinister possibilities involving deliberate harm.
Investigation reveals possible human involvement
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has stepped in to investigate the unsettling deaths. Necropsies performed on two of the birds revealed injuries consistent with trauma from a pellet gun, BB gun, or slingshot, effectively ruling out electrocution as the cause. However, officials note they have not been able to determine the exact cause of trauma for all the affected birds.
Sharon Anderson, a self-described “animal lover” and local resident, expressed her distress to KGO-TV about witnessing the birds drop dead. “It was just horrifying,” she said.
Officials launch formal investigation
A spokesperson for the California State Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed to ABC News on Monday that they have launched an official investigation into the incidents. As authorities work to solve the case, Richmond residents remain vigilant, with many now documenting bird deaths and sharing information with local officials.
The investigation continues as community members await answers about whether these deaths represent acts of cruelty or have some other explanation yet to be uncovered.
