Tennessee couple receives bags of cash instead of food at McDonald’s drive-thru

Employee chased down couple after mistakenly handing over thousands in cash

What was meant to be a routine fast-food order turned into a bizarre and unexpected moment for a couple in Hermitage, Tennessee. Greg and Stacye Terry visited their local McDonald’s drive-thru expecting their usual meal, but instead, they were handed three bags filled with thousands of dollars in cash.

According to reports by ABC13News and CBS News Channel 5, the mix-up occurred when an employee at the restaurant mistakenly gave the Terrys the outlet’s daily bank deposit, which had been packed into McDonald’s food bags alongside customer orders.

“You are not going to believe this”

Greg Terry recounted the moment he opened one of the bags after returning home and turned to his wife in disbelief. “You are not going to believe this,” he said as he pulled out three clear plastic bags filled with wads of cash.

Unbeknownst to the couple, the bags contained the restaurant’s earnings from the previous day—cash that was intended to be deposited at the bank.

Staff member ran after the couple to retrieve the money

The employee who made the error realized it moments too late. In a frantic attempt to recover the funds, they ran after the Terrys’ truck, eventually reaching their home just a few minutes away.

Upon learning what had happened, Stacye Terry said there was no hesitation about doing the right thing. “The second that he said it was their deposit, my first thing was, let’s get in the truck and take it back. There is no other way to have it. I couldn’t live with myself,” she told local media.

McDonald’s operator praises couple’s integrity

Phil Gray, the owner and operator of the McDonald’s location, expressed his deep gratitude to the Terrys for their honesty. “We are grateful for this customer and the action they took upon realizing our error,” Gray said. “It’s good to be part of a community with the values that were evidenced by this person’s actions.”

The story has quickly circulated online as a rare example of trust and integrity in action.

A familiar fast-food mistake

Incidents like this, while rare, are not unprecedented. In a similar case, a Georgia woman named Joann Oliver found $543 in one of her KFC takeout bags—the store’s daily collection. Like the Terrys, she too called the authorities and returned the money.

These surprising stories highlight how everyday people are sometimes faced with extraordinary decisions—and how integrity often wins the day.
