Turnberry, Scotland — Reflective yellow vests, not tartan trousers, dominated the landscape at Donald Trump’s golf course on Friday as Scottish police swarmed the area ahead of the former U.S. president’s expected arrival. Trump’s visit, focused on his Turnberry and Aberdeen golf resorts, is drawing both admiration and outrage, and it’s coming at a significant cost to Scottish taxpayers.
Heavy Police Deployment for Security Operation
Thousands of officers in standard-issue high-visibility gear were seen patrolling beaches, dunes, and grasslands surrounding Turnberry. Police Scotland has not disclosed the exact number of deployed personnel, citing operational confidentiality, but Assistant Chief Constable Emma Bond confirmed the operation involves “local, national, and specialist resources from across Police Scotland,” with additional support from other UK forces under mutual aid agreements.
David Kennedy, General Secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, said approximately 5,000 officers are expected to participate. “We want the president of the United States to be able to come to Scotland. That’s not what this is about,” he explained. “It’s the current state of the police service and the numbers we have [that] cause great difficulty.”
Concerns Over Cost and Police Strain
The visit’s price tag has sparked public criticism, particularly as Scotland’s police force struggles with reduced staffing and extended 12-hour shifts. “Communities that are already understaffed will be left with even fewer officers during Trump’s visit,” Kennedy said.
Many Scots are questioning why taxpayers should foot the bill for what appears to be a personal leisure trip. “Why isn’t he paying for it himself? He’s coming for golf, isn’t he?” asked Merle Fertuson, a solo protester in Edinburgh, holding a hand-drawn sign caricaturing Trump in a tuxedo. “It’s got nothing whatsoever to do with public money, either US or UK.”
Trump’s last UK visit in 2018 cost more than £14 million (approx. $19 million), including over £3 million ($4 million) for the two-day trip to Turnberry, according to Freedom of Information records.
Protests and Political Meetings Scheduled
Despite widespread public frustration, Scottish First Minister John Swinney, who has previously criticized Trump, has confirmed he will meet with the former president. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to engage with Trump during the visit.
Meanwhile, protest groups, including Stop Trump Scotland, have organized demonstrations for Saturday across Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Dumfries. “Show Trump exactly what we think of him in Scotland,” the group urged supporters on social media.
