Who Was Wesley LePatner? Blackstone Executive Among Victims in Midtown Manhattan Shooting

Quick Summary

Wesley LePatner, 43, was a prominent Blackstone executive and beloved New York community leader who was among four people killed in a mass shooting at Manhattan’s 345 Park Avenue office building on July 28, 2025. LePatner’s legacy in real estate and philanthropy, and the tragic circumstances of her death, have prompted an outpouring of respect and grief across the financial and civic worlds.

What Happened During the 345 Park Avenue Shooting?

On the evening of July 28, a gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the lobby of 345 Park Avenue carrying an assault rifle. He opened fire, killing four, including LePatner and an off-duty NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, before dying of a self-inflicted wound on an upper floor.

At least one other person was critically injured. Law enforcement continues to investigate Tamura’s motives, but reports indicate a history of mental illness and a note referencing grievances involving the NFL and CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a brain disease associated with head trauma in sports.

Who Was Wesley LePatner?

A Top Real Estate Executive

Wesley LePatner joined Blackstone in 2014 and rose to become Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT), one of the world’s largest property funds. She oversaw major investments in housing, data centers, and logistics and helped grow BREIT to a multi-billion-dollar portfolio.

Professional Journey

  • Previously spent over a decade at Goldman Sachs, where she was managing director in the Real Estate Investment Group.
  • Recognized as a smart strategist and people leader, praised for building out Blackstone’s Core+ and BREIT businesses from their inception.

Academic & Civic Involvement

  • Graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University with a BA in History.
  • Served on boards including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, UJA-Federation of New York (which honored her in 2023 for leadership), Abraham Joshua Heschel School, and Yale Library Council, and was active in Jewish and New York philanthropic circles.

Personal Life

  • Remembered as warm, generous, and respected by colleagues and friends.
  • Survived by her husband and two young children, with whom she shared a strong commitment to faith and family values.

What Is Her Legacy?

LePatner’s sudden death has shaken Wall Street, the real estate industry, and New York’s civic community. Blackstone leaders and peers described her as “brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond.” She was seen as a role model for women in finance, and her board and charitable work extended her influence far beyond the financial sector.

What Do We Know About the Shooter and the Motive?

Authorities say Tamura had a documented history of mental illness. A note referencing the NFL and CTE was found, fueling speculation about his intended target, but police have not officially announced a motive and continue to investigate whether the shooting was random or targeted.
