Who is Travis King, the US man who crossed the border into North Korea?

Who is Travis King, the US man who crossed the border into North Korea?

On Wednesday, Travis King, a 23-year-old American soldier, entered the DMZ from South Korea and crossed into North Korea. The Biden administration, which has not yet prioritized its issues with North Korea, will now face additional challenges as a result of this episode. King was a Private 2nd Class in the American Army and was based in South Korea. He was also being sent to the US for disciplinary grounds after spending more than two months in jail on assault-related charges.

According to Yonhap, King was punished for “repeatedly kicking” a police patrol car’s back door in Mapo, Seoul. He may have punched a Korean national in a nightclub in September 2022, according to suspicions. However, these allegations had nothing to do with his jail time, and on February 8 a Seoul court fined him $3,950 for kicking the police car. Travis’ mother, Claudine Gates, told ABC that her husband could not believe that his son had crossed the border without permission. Travis had to get on an aircraft to the US before crossing into North Korea, but instead, he decided to take a tour of the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The DMZ is a popular destination for tourists visiting South Korea, and numerous tour operators offer tours of the area.

Travis King may have given the North Koreans “a new bargaining chip,”

Jacco Zwetsloot, who worked for a tour company in 2012, told the BBC that there is “no way” that King skipped his flight to the US and went for the tour of the DMZ. Zwetsloot said that for US soldiers to go on a trip to the DMZ it usually takes 3 days for the authorization process.

He added that since the Covid-19 outbreak, it is challenging to get on these excursions and that the UN Command requires submission of the passport number and military ID. He continued by saying that there are two tour firms that provide trips to tourists from other countries and that advance planning was required to reserve this trip. King, who resides in Racine, Wisconsin, a city in the Midwest of the United States, was anticipated to return to his garrison in Fort Bliss, Texas. Since taking office in 2021, US President Joe Biden has not given Kim Jong Un much thought, but King may have given the North Koreans “a new bargaining chip,” according to a report from the BBC.

According to the source, North Korea will use it as a tool for propaganda, and if King is imprisoned against his will, the US will have a difficult time getting him out of Pyongyang. Biden will face intense internal pressure during the hectic election campaign period to release King from Kim’s control. The administration is already having difficulty obtaining the release from Russia of former Marine Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal writer Evan Gershkovich. The Biden administration is attempting to obtain the release of Mark Swidan, a 48-year-old Texas businessman, David Lin, 67, and Kai Li, 60, who are all still held captive in China. Trump and other Republicans will accuse Biden of being a weak world leader if he is unable to free King. If he does, it might provide him with a much-needed lift in the US elections of 2024.
