TikTok bill house vote: Live updates

The TikTok bill passes the House with a majority. ByteDane has 6 months to divest from TikTok. Otherwise, the app will be banned.

One of the most widely used social media apps in the world—used by 170 million Americans—would face significant challenges as a result of the ban If it doesn’t split from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

App stores all over the US will be prohibited from hosting TikTok on their platforms, and the company will have roughly five months to split from ByteDance.

The House bill that would outlaw the video-based social media app TikTok is currently up for a vote. If it doesn’t split from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, one of the most widely used social media apps in the world—used by 170 million Americans—would face significant challenges as a result of the ban.

If it is successful, app stores all over the US will be prohibited from hosting TikTok on their platforms, and the company will have roughly five months to split from ByteDance.

As soon as there are any updates on the vote, we’ll provide them to you here.

The federal government and more than half of US states have already taken action against the TikTok app on official devices, even as House lawmakers discuss a more comprehensive ban on the app.

According to a CNN investigation from the previous year, 33 states had restricted the use of the app on devices owned by the government.

People believe government agencies should have more authority to control devices that are directly under their jurisdiction. However, placing limitations on private individuals may give rise to First Amendment issues.

Sen Walberg: “Mr. Speaker last March when I asked about America’s data being stored on access by China, TikTok CEO stated under oath that it was not accessible by the CCP. However, this statement was a lie, as their own internal recording said everything is seen in China, HR 7521 gives Tiktok, six months to divest from their parent company ByteDance. It’s their choice. TikTok needs to decide whether they value their users or their ties to the Chinese Communist Party.”

Sen. Massie: “The bill that’s offered here today, even though I know it’s offered genuinely, it could also be named the Facebook Protection and Enhancement Act. Because the American people are not going to benefit most from this. It will be Facebook. Their stock is going to go up if this bill should pass the Senate.”

I don’t use TikTok. I find it unwise to do so. But after careful review, I’m a no on this legislation.

“China is manipulating American minds”

Sen. Crenshaw: “The primary counterarguments to this bill seem to be shallow. ‘It doesn’t do everything I want, and Facebook’s really mean. And I don’t want them to make money.’ So what then that means you owe Chinese access to all of our data and access to manipulate the minds of Americans? I don’t think so. This is a very specific bill, very specifically tailored, it does not harm American companies or American individuals, you know it, you got to read it. Pass this bill.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene: “I rise today as the only member of Congress that has ever been banned by social media…Twitter banned me… I believe that this bill can cause future problems. It’s opening Pandora’s box.”
