Watch: Zelenskyy Shares Rare Video From Secret Bunker

As the war between Ukraine and Russia enters its fourth year, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has opened a door few outsiders had seen before. In a nearly 19-minute video posted on X, the Ukrainian president revealed the underground bunker in central Kyiv where he coordinated the country’s initial defense in February 2022.

The location is more than concrete and cables. It is where Zelenskyy rejected evacuation advice from then US President Joe Biden and delivered a line that became shorthand for Ukraine’s defiance: “I need ammunition, not a ride.”

The footage offers a rare look at the physical and psychological nerve center of Ukraine’s resistance.

What is Zelenskyy’s secret war bunker in Kyiv?

The bunker sits beneath Bankova Street in central Kyiv, the heart of Ukraine’s government district. According to Zelenskyy, it was from a small white-walled room in this underground complex that he made his first wartime calls to global leaders as Russian forces advanced toward the capital.

The structure appears to be a Soviet-era bomb shelter, designed to ensure continuity of government during large-scale military assaults. Its design reflects Cold War logic: function over comfort, survival over aesthetics.

What the video reveals about the facility

The footage shows:

• Compact rooms assigned to the presidency, cabinet of ministers, and parliament
• About a dozen chairs in each room, a television screen, and Ukrainian flags
• Rows of exposed black cables along the walls
• Large gas pipes and electrical boxes mounted to low ceilings
• Maze-like corridors marked by blue-and-yellow directional signs
• Bright war posters contrasting with green emergency exit signs and red-and-white safety tape

The visual language is stark. Concrete, wiring, emergency signage. It resembles a subterranean operations grid rather than a presidential office. Yet this is where strategic decisions that shaped Europe’s security architecture were made.

Today marks exactly four years since Putin started his three-day push to take Kyiv. And that says a great deal about our resistance, about how Ukraine has fought all this time. Behind those words stand millions of our people, immense courage, incredibly hard work, endurance, and… pic.twitter.com/9qiqACurhx

Where did Zelenskyy tell Biden, “I need ammunition, not a ride”?

In the video, Zelenskyy sits in a black leather chair inside the bunker and recalls a phone call from Biden in the early days of the invasion.

According to Zelenskyy, Biden warned him of an imminent threat and urged him to leave Ukraine urgently, offering assistance with evacuation. Zelenskyy responded from that underground room with what would become one of the defining quotes of the war.

“The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” the Ukrainian embassy in Britain attributed to him on February 26, 2022, two days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

That moment mattered for several reasons:

• It signaled that Ukraine’s leadership would not flee.
• It reassured Ukrainians who feared a rapid collapse of the state.
• It framed the conflict as a fight for sovereignty rather than the survival of a single administration.

Why is Zelenskyy revealing the bunker now?

Timing is strategic. The war has crossed into its fourth year. What began as a lightning invasion attempt has evolved into a grinding conflict defined by artillery duels, drone warfare, and attritional battles.

Zelenskyy used the anniversary to reinforce a narrative: Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, failed to break Ukraine’s resolve or decapitate its leadership in the opening phase.

The bunker video serves several purposes:

• Reasserts the symbolism of resistance at a moment of war fatigue
• Reminds allies of the stakes and sacrifices made since 2022
• Reinforces Zelenskyy’s image as a wartime leader who stayed in Kyiv

In political communication terms, the message is calibrated. It looks backward to inspire endurance moving forward.

How has US support shaped Ukraine’s defense?

The bunker anecdote is inseparable from US military support. Since 2022, Washington has provided billions of dollars in assistance, including advanced weapons systems, training, and intelligence support.

Key components have included:

• Javelin anti-tank missiles
• HIMARS rocket systems
• Air defense systems
• Ammunition and logistical support

The phrase “I need ammunition” was not a rhetorical flourish. It reflected Ukraine’s immediate operational need in the early days of the invasion. US and allied shipments became critical to slowing Russian advances and defending Kyiv.

What challenges does Ukraine face in year four of the war?

The strategic picture in 2026 is more complex than in 2022.

War fatigue

After years of heavy casualties, infrastructure damage, and economic strain, fatigue is mounting among civilians and soldiers alike. Sustaining morale becomes harder as the conflict drags on.

Political pressure from Washington

Since January 2025, US President Donald Trump has signaled pressure on Kyiv to consider a negotiated peace deal, potentially involving territorial concessions.

That shift introduces uncertainty into Ukraine’s long-term military planning and diplomatic strategy.

Continued Russian strikes

Missile and drone attacks from Moscow’s forces remain a constant threat, underscoring why hardened facilities like the Kyiv bunker still matter.

Why the bunker matters beyond symbolism

Leadership during wartime is often judged by presence. Zelenskyy’s decision to remain in Kyiv, rather than relocate abroad, became central to Ukraine’s international narrative.

The bunker now stands as a physical embodiment of that decision.

Historically, continuity-of-government bunkers have played pivotal roles in crises, from Cold War command centers to modern secure facilities used during terrorist attacks. They are built for worst-case scenarios, but they also project resolve.

In Zelenskyy’s case, the underground office became a stage for broadcasts. The confined room amplified a message that reached global audiences: Ukraine would not fold in the opening act.

TL;DR

• Zelenskyy released a video from his secret Kyiv bunker marking four years of war.
• The bunker is a Soviet-era bomb shelter beneath Bankova Street.
• It is where he rejected evacuation and told Biden, “I need ammunition, not a ride.”
• The footage reinforces Ukraine’s narrative of resistance.
• As the war enters year four, Kyiv faces war fatigue, continued Russian strikes, and political pressure over peace talks.
