Dubai to introduce flying taxis by 2026

Dubai is all set to launch flying taxis by 2026, its firmest launch date yet. Read to know more about UAE’s dream project.

Flying taxis, a reality by 2026

Once more, Dubai is preparing to launch flying taxis and provided the firmest to-date details on Sunday. The project is projected to launch by 2026, almost a decade since its initial promises almost a decade ago. Earlier, United Arab Emirates’ commercial capital made promises of introducing the feature. The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum took to Twitter to announce the service.

However, officials did not provide a reason why Joby Aviation was replacing German-made electric Volocopter, or the Chinese-made EHang 184 and XPeng X2. However, they were previously on the exhibit. Instead, a Joby aircraft was featured at the stand on Monday during the World Government Summit. “We’re excited about the opportunity and actively exploring the possibility,” stated Oliver Walker-Jones. Walker-Jones is a spokesperson for the company.

Unlike last year’s promise of flying taxis, more program details were shared this time around. Dubai will be building four “vertiports” near Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah archipelago, Dubai International Airport, and downtown Dubai. Moreover, each ventiport will have four charging stations and two launchpads. Another difference involves the use of piloted taxies instead of autonomous ones. However, they will have four seats as previously revealed.

“We believe those are attractive areas with business hubs and tourist hubs that could generate considerable demand,” stated Ahmed Bahrozyan. Bahrozyan is an official in UAE’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Additionally, he revealed the pricing of flying taxis “will be in the range of a limousine service in Dubai, maybe slightly higher”. As per RTA, the limo services in the city are “at least 30 percent higher than taxi fares”.
