Ohio residents are being cautioned about a new scam involving fraudulent text messages that claim recipients owe unpaid traffic tickets. These messages, which falsely appear to be from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), warn of license suspension, registration holds, and even legal action unless immediate payment is made.
Texts threaten penalties starting June 10
One such scam message obtained by WDTN.com reads:
“Please pay immediately before enforcement to avoid license suspension and further legal disputes.”
It falsely claims that “enforcement penalties begin on June 10” and lists consequences like:
- A 35% service fee
- Credit score damage
- Imminent legal enforcement
The message also contains a link that mimics an official site, urging users to click or reply “Y” to avoid further action.
Officials confirm it’s a scam
“This is a scam,” confirmed Charlie Norman, Ohio BMV Registrar.
“Do not click any links and delete the text. The Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”
What to do if you receive the message
DO NOT:
- Click any links
- Respond to the message
- Share personal or payment information
DO:
- Delete the text immediately
- Report the message as spam
- Contact your local police if you’ve already shared sensitive information
Authorities are emphasizing public awareness to prevent the spread of this scam, especially as it targets unsuspecting drivers using fear tactics and fake deadlines.
For legitimate information about traffic tickets or vehicle registration, Ohioans should visit the official BMV website or call customer service directly.
