The do's and don'ts of cleaning your car: Can you use a normal window cleaner?

Keeping your car clean not only enhances its appearance but also helps maintain its value. However, when it comes to cleaning your car, it’s important to use the right products to avoid damaging the paintwork or other surfaces. One common question that arises is whether normal household window cleaners can be used on your car. In this article, we will explore the do’s and don’ts of cleaning your car, with a specific focus on cleaning car windows and windscreens.

Why you should use the right products when cleaning your car

Using the right products when cleaning your car is important to ensure a thorough and safe cleaning process, as using the wrong products can lead to further damage down the road. One of your primary concerns when cleaning your car is the paintwork. If a product contains harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or even incompatible chemicals, it can strip the protective wax layer and cause the paint to fade or become dull. Additionally, using the wrong products on delicate surfaces, such as leather or plastic, can lead to cracking or discoloration. This is why car manufacturers often recommend specific cleaning products that are specifically designed for automotive use. These products are formulated to be gentle yet effective, ensuring a thorough cleaning without causing any damage.

Can you use a normal window cleaner on your car’s windows?

While a normal window cleaner may seem like a convenient option for cleaning your car’s windows, it is generally not recommended as car windows and windscreens are often treated with different compounds and chemicals. Generic window cleaners are also designed for house windows, which are different from car windows and windscreens and may contain chemicals that can damage other parts of your car, such as the paint or trim. Additionally, normal household window cleaners may leave streaks or residues on car surfaces, which can be difficult to remove and may require further cleaning.

In most cases, it’s best to avoid using window cleaner on your car to prevent any potential damage or complications down the road. Instead, it’s often a better decision to use automotive glass cleaners that are specifically designed for use on car windows and windscreens. They are also much better at removing tough dirt, grime, and bugs from the glass surface without leaving streaks.

A step-by-step guide to cleaning your car windows

  • Before you begin, gather all the necessary supplies, including an automotive glass cleaner, a microfiber cloth, and a spray bottle. (It is better to clean your car during regular car washing.)
  • Begin by spraying the glass cleaner onto the exterior surface of the windows. Use the microfiber cloth to wipe away the dirt and grime in a circular motion. Be sure to pay attention to the edges and corners.
  • Once the exterior is clean, move to the interior of the car. Spray the cleaner onto the interior side of the windows and use the microfiber cloth to wipe away any smudges or fingerprints. Again, work in a circular motion for the best results.
  • After you clean the interiors, inspect the windows for any streaks or residues. If you notice any, simply re-clean the affected areas with the cleaner and cloth until there are none.

While you’re at it, take the opportunity to clean other surfaces in your car, such as the dashboard or door panels. Use appropriate car cleaning products for each surface, and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Find out more here.

Conclusion

All in all, using the right products when cleaning your car is essential to maintaining its appearance and protecting its paint surfaces and trims. While a normal window cleaner may be suitable for glass surfaces in your home, it is generally not recommended for use on your car as they are different from ordinary windows in houses. Instead, opt for automotive glass cleaners to safely clean your car’s windows. Remember to use a soft microfiber cloth and follow a step-by-step guide to achieve streak-free, sparkling clean windows. By following these do’s and don’ts for cleaning your car windows, you can ensure that your vehicle looks its best for years to come.
