Petal Gahlot rebukes Pakistan PM at UNGA | Indian diplomat profile

What triggered Petal Gahlot’s sharp rebuttal at the UN?

India and Pakistan clashed once again at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif used his speech to target India. On September 26, 2025, India exercised its right of reply through Petal Gahlot, First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN.

Gahlot delivered a pointed counter, calling Sharif’s remarks “absurd theatrics” and accusing Pakistan of glorifying terrorism. She reminded the assembly that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, had been sheltered by Pakistan for nearly a decade before being killed by US forces in Abbottabad.

“No degree of drama and no level of lies can conceal the facts,” Gahlot told the UNGA, directly challenging Sharif’s narrative.

What did Petal Gahlot say about the India-Pakistan conflict?

Sharif also referred to the recent India-Pakistan military confrontation. Gahlot rejected his version of events, calling it “bizarre.”

She explained that until May 9, Pakistan had been threatening escalation. But just a day later, on May 10, its military pleaded directly with India for a cessation of hostilities. Her response was aimed at highlighting Pakistan’s shifting stance and lack of credibility on security matters.

Who is Petal Gahlot?

The sharp rebuttal has made Petal Gahlot a trending name, with many curious about her background and career trajectory.

  • Early life and education: Born in New Delhi, Gahlot completed her graduation at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She pursued her master’s in political science and government at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi.
  • Advanced training: She also holds a master’s degree in language interpretation and translation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, Monterey (USA).
  • Professional career: Before her UN posting, she worked as an under secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), specifically in the European West Division (2020–2023). During this period, she also had stints at Indian missions in Paris and San Francisco.
  • UN role: In July 2023, she was appointed as First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, a role where she represents India on global security, political, and humanitarian issues.

Why is Petal Gahlot seen as a rising star in Indian diplomacy?

Petal Gahlot embodies the new generation of Indian diplomats: globally trained, multilingual, and assertive in defending India’s interests on the world stage. Her ability to balance sharp rebuttals with diplomatic poise has earned her admiration not only within India but also among international observers.

Her speech at the UNGA reflects a broader shift in India’s diplomatic posture, more confident, more direct, and unwilling to allow Pakistan’s claims to go unanswered in international forums.

What does this mean for India-Pakistan relations at the UN?

The exchange between Sharif and Gahlot underscores the continuing tensions between India and Pakistan at multilateral platforms. Pakistan frequently raises the Kashmir issue at the UN, while India counters by spotlighting Pakistan’s record on terrorism.

Diplomats like Gahlot are increasingly becoming the face of India’s assertive diplomacy, tackling misinformation, defending national security, and projecting India’s image as a responsible power.
