"Smartest AI on Earth": All about Elon Musk's xAI Grok 3 chatbot

A new challenger in the AI race

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is set to launch its highly anticipated chatbot, Grok 3, on Monday. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has billed it as the “smartest AI on Earth,” marking a major milestone in the fast-evolving AI industry.

Musk announced on his social media platform, X, that Grok 3 will go live with a demonstration at 8:00 PM Pacific Time (0400 GMT). The release will place xAI in direct competition with industry leaders like OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind, as the race to develop the most advanced chatbot technology intensifies.

Cutting-edge AI with self-correction capabilities

Grok 3 has been trained on synthetic data and boasts advanced capabilities, including the ability to self-correct by analyzing its own errors to enhance logical consistency.

According to xAI, this new iteration builds upon the strengths of its predecessor, Grok 2, and significantly improves response accuracy while reducing the phenomenon of “hallucinations”—incorrect or misleading responses generated by AI models.

The chatbot’s development has been powered by xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, which was built in just eight months and utilizes 100,000 Nvidia GPU hours for training. The system’s efficiency and adaptability have been touted as game-changing advancements in AI technology.

At the World Government Summit in Dubai, Musk hinted at the groundbreaking nature of Grok 3, stating, “This might be the last time that an AI is better than Grok.” Early performance tests suggest that the model surpasses competitors such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

In the days leading up to the launch, Musk informed his followers that he would be going offline to work with his team on fine-tuning the AI model. Over the weekend, he provided updates signaling that the project was on track, assuring his audience that everything was “looking good” for Monday’s unveiling.

Live demo details

Grok 3 is set to debut with a live demonstration on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 8:00 PM PT (Tuesday, February 18, at 9:30 AM IST or 4:00 AM GMT). The chatbot will be accessible as a free AI assistant on Musk’s microblogging platform, X.com.

Its predecessor, Grok 2, was launched in August 2024, and the new iteration is expected to be three times faster. The release comes just weeks after DeepSeek introduced a free AI assistant that outperformed ChatGPT in Apple’s App Store rankings, adding further competition to the AI sector.

xAI’s ambitious expansion plans

Beyond the Grok 3 launch, xAI is reportedly in the process of raising $10 billion in funding, according to Bloomberg. The funding round, which includes major investors such as Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Valor Equity Partners, is expected to push the company’s valuation to a staggering $75 billion.

As the AI arms race accelerates, all eyes will be on xAI’s latest innovation. Whether Grok 3 will live up to Musk’s claim as the “smartest AI on Earth” remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—the competition is heating up.
