The E-commerce giant and Chinese billionaire Jack Ma ran into trouble with the Chinese government for violation of anti-monopoly regulations. As per a recent media report, the 58-year-old has been living in Tokyo for the last six months. During his stay in Japan, Ma and his family have been visiting ski resorts and hot springs in the countryside outside the city. Additionally, as per the Financial Times, he has been regularly traveling to Israel and the US.
“His absence from China has coincided with the escalation of President Xi Jinping’s zero-Covid controls this year. This led to a harsh lockdown of Shanghai and the surrounding Yangtze river delta in April and May and sparked nationwide protests over recent days,” revealed the report.

Jack Ma has largely disappeared from public view after his accusing state-run banks in China of having a “pawnshop mentality”. Additionally, he also called for bold and new players that are capable of expanding credit to the collateral poor. Last year Chinese regulators called off the 37 billion initial public offering from Ant and fined Ma’s firm $2.8 billion for antitrust abuse.
Before the run-ins with the government, Ma visited India and met with Prime Minister Modi to discuss Alibaba’s new interests. The Alibaba founder has a home in Hangzhou, a city close to Shanghai, Alibaba’s headquarters. Since the fallout, he has been spotted in other nations including the Netherlands and Spain.
