Elon Musk’s India Connection Behind Son’s Name ‘Sekhar’

Elon Musk’s India Connection Behind Son’s Name ‘Sekhar’

Elon Musk has once again drawn global attention, this time not for rockets or AI, but for a deeply personal revelation about his children’s names. In a recent post on X, the billionaire entrepreneur explained that his son’s name, Strider Sekhar, carries a blend of fantasy fiction and Indian scientific legacy, highlighting an unexpected India connection.

The disclosure has sparked interest not just among Musk followers but also among readers curious about how pop culture, science, and personal influences intersect in the tech mogul’s life.

How Elon Musk explained his children’s names

Responding to a post shared by the X handle Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, Elon Musk shared a photo with his twins and offered details about their names and inspirations.

In his post, Musk said his son’s full name is Strider Sekhar, while his daughter’s name is Comet Azure. Each name, he explained, was chosen with a specific reference in mind, reflecting his long-standing interests in science fiction, gaming, and physics.

Why the name Strider Sekhar stands out

Musk explained that his son’s name draws from two very different but equally meaningful sources.

The first name, Strider, comes from Aragorn, a central character in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. In the story, Aragorn is first introduced under the alias Strider, a ranger known for resilience, leadership, and quiet strength. Tolkien’s work has long been admired in technology and science circles, and Musk has referenced it multiple times over the years.

The second part of the name, Sekhar, is where the India connection comes in. Musk said it was inspired by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, the Indian-American theoretical physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983. Chandrasekhar is best known for his groundbreaking work on stellar evolution and black holes, including the Chandrasekhar limit.

By combining a fictional hero with a real-world scientific giant, Musk framed the name as a tribute to imagination and intellect.

A useful visual here would be a split graphic showing Aragorn on one side and Chandrasekhar on the other, visually reinforcing the dual inspiration behind the name.

What inspired the name Comet Azure

Musk also revealed the story behind his daughter’s name, Comet Azure. According to him, the name comes from Elden Ring, a popular action role-playing video game.

Comet Azure is known within the game as one of the most powerful spells, capable of overwhelming enemies with a sustained blast of energy. The reference fits squarely with Musk’s public enthusiasm for video games and futuristic themes.

This choice underscores how Musk often draws from modern digital culture just as readily as from classical literature or science.

Who are the twins’ parents

Strider Sekhar and Comet Azure were born in November 2021 to Musk and Shivon Zilis, a senior executive at Neuralink, one of Musk’s brain-computer interface companies.

The twins have two younger siblings:

  • Arcadia, born in 2024
  • Seldon Lycurgus, born in March 2025

Zilis herself has an India connection. Her mother, Sharda Zilis, is of Punjabi Indian origin, adding another layer of cultural linkage to the name Sekhar.

An internal link could be added here to a profile piece on Shivon Zilis and her role at Neuralink.

Why this revelation resonated online

Musk’s post gained traction for several reasons.

First, it humanized a figure often associated with grand technological ambitions. Second, it highlighted an Indian scientific legacy that is not always part of mainstream popular discourse. And third, it reinforced Musk’s reputation for unconventional naming choices that blend intellect, fandom, and symbolism.

For Indian audiences in particular, the nod to Chandrasekhar struck a chord, serving as a reminder of the global impact of Indian-origin scientists.

Unrelated controversies surrounding X and Grok

The name revelation came amid ongoing scrutiny of Musk-owned platform X in Europe and elsewhere.

Since December 2023, X has been under investigation by European regulators under strict digital content laws. Separately, Musk’s AI assistant Grok has faced criticism in Europe, India, and Malaysia over the generation of inappropriate and sexualised content.

In India, authorities have directed X to remove vulgar, obscene, and unlawful material generated by Grok or face legal consequences.

A nonprofit group, AI Forensics, analysed around 20,000 images generated by Grok over a one-week period and reported that about 2 percent appeared to depict individuals who looked 18 or younger, including images of young women or girls in revealing clothing.

Responding to the allegations, X reiterated a statement previously made by Musk, saying that anyone using Grok to generate illegal content would face the same consequences as those who upload illegal material themselves.

Why the India connection matters

While the controversy around AI moderation continues, Musk’s naming revelation offers a contrasting glimpse into his personal values.

By choosing Sekhar in honor of Chandrasekhar, Musk highlighted the lasting influence of Indian-origin scientists on global science and technology. It also reflects how figures like Chandrasekhar continue to inspire across generations, disciplines, and borders.

For readers, the story is less about celebrity names and more about how cultural, scientific, and personal influences shape even the smallest details of public figures’ lives.

TL;DR

Elon Musk revealed that his son’s name, Strider Sekhar, is inspired by Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings and Nobel Prize–winning physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. His daughter’s name, Comet Azure, comes from a powerful spell in the video game Elden Ring. The revelation highlighted Musk’s mix of fantasy, science, gaming culture, and an India connection through Chandrasekhar and Shivon Zilis’s heritage.
