TikTok Ownership Saga Takes New Turn as Musk Sale Rumors Spark Social Media Frenzy

A Bloomberg report suggesting potential Chinese plans to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations to Elon Musk has ignited intense speculation and debate across social media platforms, even as TikTok officials moved quickly to dismiss the claims.

TikTok’s swift response

The social media giant wasted no time addressing the rumors. “We can’t be expected to comment on pure fiction,” a TikTok spokesperson told BBC News, categorically denying any validity to the reported discussions.

The news sparked immediate reactions across platforms, with influential figures joining the conversation. Popular content creator MrBeast humorously weighed in, tweeting, “Okay fine, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned.”

Public response has been notably divided, with some users celebrating the possibility while others expressing concern about Musk’s potential involvement, citing his controversial management of X (formerly Twitter).

Political complexities

In a surprising development, Donald Trump, who is set to return to office on January 20, has urged the Supreme Court to postpone its decision on TikTok’s fate. Sources indicate Trump met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew at Mar-a-Lago in December, suggesting potential behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Bipartisan efforts are emerging in Congress to extend the January 19 deadline for TikTok’s potential ban. Key figures including:

  • Senator Edward Markey
  • Representative Ro Khanna

are actively pressing the Biden administration for additional negotiation time.

The Biden administration maintains that TikTok poses potential national security risks, suggesting the platform could be used by Chinese authorities for:

  • Espionage activities
  • Political manipulation

TikTok continues to strongly deny these allegations, arguing that a ban would violate First Amendment rights in the United States.

What’s next

As the January 19 deadline approaches, the fate of TikTok’s U.S. operations remains uncertain. The confluence of legal challenges, political maneuvering, and potential ownership changes has created a complex situation that could reshape the social media landscape in America.
