Tesla has begun deliveries of its long-delayed semi-electric trucks to a new group of customers, nearly nine years after CEO Elon Musk first unveiled the heavy-duty vehicle.
The company confirmed the latest deliveries during an event at its dedicated semi-factory in Sparks, Nevada, on September 24. The occasion marked a major production milestone for a truck that Tesla first presented in 2017.
There is an important distinction, however. Tesla did make limited semi-deliveries to customers, including PepsiCo, beginning in late 2022. The latest development marks the transition from that limited programme to production from a dedicated high-volume manufacturing facility.
The semi is aimed at the Class 8 heavy-duty trucking market, where long-haul operators are increasingly examining electric vehicles as fuel costs and emissions requirements put pressure on conventional diesel fleets.
Why is Tesla Semi finally reaching more customers?
The Semi was unveiled in November 2017, with Tesla originally targeting production in 2019.
That timeline slipped repeatedly as the company prioritized battery production and its passenger-vehicle business. The dedicated Nevada manufacturing operation has now changed the equation by giving the Semi its own high-volume production line.
Tesla said the first Semi rolled off that line in April 2026. The company has designed the new facility to eventually produce as many as 50,000 trucks per year.
The September 24 rollout therefore represents the start of a new phase for the Semi, rather than the first time a customer has ever received one.
Who is receiving the Tesla Semi?
Tesla executives identified PepsiCo, DHL, and US Foods among the customers involved in the latest rollout.
The presence of established logistics and food-distribution companies is significant because heavy-duty electric trucks are typically evaluated through real-world fleet operations rather than consumer-style purchases.
Fleet operators care about factors such as charging time, range under load, maintenance requirements, route length, and total operating cost.
The first customers will therefore provide an important test of how the Semi performs outside controlled demonstrations.
How far can the Tesla Semi travel?
Tesla currently advertises two versions of the Semi.
The standard-range model is estimated to travel about 325 miles, or roughly 523 kilometers, on a charge.
The long-range version is rated at up to 500 miles, or about 805 kilometers, under Tesla’s stated conditions.
Tesla says the 500-mile figure applies to a fully loaded trailer under specified testing assumptions. Semi engineering chief Dan Priestley said customers had validated the figure in real-world use.
The company cautions that actual range depends on factors such as payload, weather, speed, terrain, and trailer configuration.
What is the difference between the two semi-versions?
The main difference is range.
The standard version is designed around an estimated 325-mile range, while the long-range truck is rated for approximately 500 miles.
Both versions are Class 8 battery-electric tractors designed for heavy freight.
For long-haul operators, the longer-range version could reduce the number of charging stops required on extended routes, although route planning and charger availability remain critical considerations.
Tesla’s current specification sheet also lists up to 1.2 megawatts of charging power for the Semi and says the vehicle can recover up to 60% of its range in 30 minutes using its Megacharger system.
Why are diesel prices important right now?
Tesla’s expanded Semi rollout comes at a notable moment for trucking companies.
US diesel prices have surged to record levels in September, exceeding $6 per gallon nationally and putting additional pressure on freight operators.
Diesel is one of the highest variable costs for long-haul trucking businesses, so sustained high fuel prices can make alternative powertrains more attractive.
The economics are not determined by fuel prices alone. Fleet operators also have to consider vehicle purchase costs, electricity rates, charging infrastructure, maintenance, battery life, and utilisation.
Still, unusually high diesel prices give electric trucks a potentially more favourable operating-cost environment than they would face during periods of cheap fuel.
How much will the Tesla Semi cost?
Tesla did not disclose pricing for the newly delivered trucks during the September 24 rollout event.
That leaves the company’s current commercial pricing structure less transparent than it is for its passenger vehicles.
The absence of public pricing also makes it difficult to calculate the Semi’s full cost advantage over a diesel tractor without considering fleet-specific electricity, maintenance and financing costs.
For large trucking operators, the important metric is often total cost of ownership rather than the sticker price alone.
