New monthly subscription for channels and promoted content coming soon
WhatsApp is set to roll out a significant update that could reshape the way users engage with the platform. The Meta-owned messaging service has announced a new feature involving monthly subscription fees—a major shift from its long-standing free-to-use model. Alongside this, Meta is also preparing to introduce advertisements within status updates.
WhatsApp to introduce monthly fees for channels
The changes primarily target WhatsApp Channels and the Status section. For the first time, creators running Channels will be able to charge a monthly subscription fee, offering followers exclusive updates in return. Additionally, a new Promoted Channels feature will allow users to boost visibility by paying for increased reach.
Despite these monetization updates, WhatsApp has emphasized that its core messaging experience will remain unchanged. According to The US Sun, the main chat interface will stay free and will not be impacted by these additions.
Ads to appear in status updates, based on limited user data
Meta’s new ad experience will draw on limited user data to deliver targeted content. This includes basic information such as a user’s city, country, age, language, the Channels followed, and interactions with Channel ads—provided WhatsApp is connected through Meta’s Accounts Center.
WhatsApp says core chat experience remains private
The company has addressed privacy concerns by confirming that the new features won’t interfere with personal chats. A statement from WhatsApp explained:
“Like everything we do at WhatsApp, we’ve built these features in the most private way possible. Your personal messages, calls, and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning no one (not even us) can see or hear them.”
The update follows earlier backlash over AI features occupying space on the main screen. To avoid further disruption, WhatsApp clarified:
“These new features will appear only on the Updates tab, away from your personal chats. This means if you only use WhatsApp to chat with friends and loved ones there is no change to your experience at all.”
The features are expected to be introduced gradually worldwide.
