Who Will Succeed Tim Cook as Apple CEO? John Ternus Emerges As The Frontrunner In A Major Shake-Up

John Ternus emerges as the frontrunner to replace Tim Cook

Apple’s long-serving CEO, Tim Cook, is reportedly preparing to step down, and John Ternus, the company’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has emerged as the leading contender to replace him, according to a Bloomberg report.

Management reshuffle on the horizon

As Cook turns 65 next month, Apple is said to be considering a broader leadership reshuffle. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, long viewed as Cook’s likely successor, has already delegated daily operations to Sabih Khan and is preparing to exit.

Cook may stay involved post-retirement

Even after stepping down, Cook is expected to remain involved with Apple, possibly as chairman of the board. This would mirror post-retirement transitions seen at other tech giants — Jeff Bezos at Amazon, Larry Ellison at Oracle, Bill Gates at Microsoft, and Reed Hastings at Netflix. Analysts note that Cook’s continued presence would help guide Apple through Donald Trump’s presidency, which runs until 2029.

Ternus’s profile and Apple’s current direction

At 50, Ternus represents Apple’s push to keep a technologist, rather than a traditional salesperson, at the helm. Under his leadership, Apple has strengthened its in-house chip program and seen positive reception for the iPhone 17 series. However, the company continues to face challenges in areas such as mixed reality, artificial intelligence, smart homes, and autonomous vehicles.

Rising influence within Apple

Ternus has become increasingly visible at Apple’s major events, including the September hardware showcase that unveiled the iPhone 17 Air, the first major redesign of the flagship smartphone in years. He now plays a key role in shaping Apple’s product strategy, extending beyond his original hardware engineering responsibilities.

Other top executives expected to depart

Cook’s retirement could trigger a wave of exits among Apple’s senior leadership. Along with COO Jeff Williams, AI chief John Giannandrea and hardware technologies head Johny Srouji are also likely to leave. Giannandrea’s position has been under scrutiny following the underwhelming rollout of Apple Intelligence and the failed Siri revamp. Srouji, who leads Apple’s chip division, could be succeeded by Zongjian Chen or Sri Santhanam.
