Germany continues to battle with the fourth wave of deadly coronavirus. A top virologist warns about the death of a further 100,000 people. Christian Drosten describes it as a real emergency situation. “We have to act right now,” he says.
With 459 infections per 100,000 persons, Saxony has the highest seven-day infection rate in Germany. Unvaccinated people do not have permission to enter taverns, restaurants, public events, and leisure facilities in Germany. This has infuriated anti-vaxxers. (Lorazepam) As a result, they were protesting in Leipzig in large numbers. Earlier this week, the incidence rate, which measures the number of new coronavirus infections per 100,000 persons in the previous seven days, jumped to 201.1, setting a new high since the pandemic began more than a year ago.
Vaccination rates have remained below 70% despite officials’ pleading for the populace to receive the vaccine.  “For the unvaccinated, the risk is high that they will become infected in the coming months,” warns RKI chief Lothar Wieler. The increase in German cases coincides with the country’s aftermath of the general election in September. So far, the incoming coalition parties have ruled out obligatory vaccinations. The parties state no additional implemention of lockdown, at least not for the vaccinated.
The cases are rising all over Europe. The country is going through the “fourth wave” of the virus. According to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as Europe continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic. French President Emmanuel Macron advises citizens to get vaccinated in the face of increased hospitalizations in the country. According to reports, COVID-19 instances have also increased in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
