Hollywood’s former power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, famously dubbed “Brangelina,” have officially reached a divorce settlement after an arduous eight-year legal dispute, according to Jolie’s lawyer.
A high-profile split
The couple, who married in 2014 and share six children, had been one of the entertainment industry’s most celebrated duos. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
The case gained further attention when Jolie later alleged that Pitt was abusive to her and two of their children during a private jet incident that same year. While Pitt denied the accusations, a subsequent police investigation did not result in charges.
Jolie’s focus on “healing”
James Simon, Jolie’s lawyer, told People magazine that the actress has prioritized “finding peace and healing for their family” throughout the process.
“This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago,” Simon said. “Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
When the separation was first announced in 2016, the couple released a joint statement promising to keep the proceedings private. Despite this, details of their acrimonious split have emerged over the years.
A battle over assets and accusations
The divorce has been complicated by disputes over significant assets, most notably Château Miraval, a French vineyard the couple purchased in 2008 for 25 million euros.
In 2022, Brad Pitt accused Jolie of selling her share in the vineyard to Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler without his consent, allegedly to harm his wine business. Jolie did not comment publicly on the lawsuit.
The couple also faced a prolonged child custody battle, ultimately reaching a joint custody agreement in 2021.
From Hollywood stars to legal adversaries
Jolie and Pitt’s relationship first captured global attention when they met on the set of the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Their union marked Pitt’s second marriage, following his relationship with Friends star Jennifer Aniston, and Jolie’s third, after actors Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.
Jolie, known for her performances in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Changeling, and Girl, Interrupted, is set to star in Maria, a biopic about opera singer Maria Callas.
Brad Pitt, meanwhile, continues his illustrious career with roles in Fight Club, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and the upcoming Formula One film F1, where he plays veteran driver Sonny Hayes.
What’s next?
While a divorce settlement has been reached, it remains unclear if this will fully resolve their ongoing legal disputes, including the Château Miraval litigation. For now, however, both stars seem poised to move forward, leaving behind one of Hollywood’s most publicized separations.
