The singer released a message when he unveiled his sixth album, to the public, explaining why he had been absent from the scene all this time. Sheeran disclosed that his wife Cherry Seaborn had a tumour diagnosis while they were expecting their second child. In 2022, Seaborn and Sheeran welcomed a girl as their second child.

Sheeran did, however, write openly about how his new album, Subtract, was affected by Seaborn’s illness and other tragedies. The couple found the tumour not long after Jamal Edwards, Sheeran’s best friend, passed away suddenly at age 31. Sheeran’s mental health was severely impacted by these two events.

“I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade`s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts,” Sheeran wrote.
