The response to Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite all the negative press, the movie received for its casting, it made a ton of money at the US box office. According to Variety, the movie made an astounding $146 million in its first weekend.
The movie has made more than $204.6 million in its first five days of release, exceeding all forecasts. The movie has performed brilliantly not just on the domestic market but even abroad. The worldwide total of Chris Pratt’s movie has surpassed Frozen 2’s $358 million box office haul and now stands at $377 million. This makes it the largest global opening for an animated film.
The film, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, has dethroned the 2016 Warcraft picture ($210 million) as the biggest-ever worldwide opening video game film. Domestically, it outperformed Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s three-day debut of $72.1 million, according to Comic Book.
It also had the greatest weekend of the year, outperforming Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which grossed $106 million in its first weekend. The film is an animated rendition of the same-named Nintendo video game franchise. The title character is voiced by a Marvel star, and Princess Peach is played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Charlie Day plays Mario’s younger brother, Luigi.
Voices have also been provided by Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen.

The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, with the former praising the adventurous drama for its colorful animation. Rotten Tomatoes, a popular review aggregation site, gave the picture a rating of 54%. “While it’s nowhere near as thrilling as turtle tipping your way to 128 lives, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a colorful — albeit thinly plotted — an animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendont’s,” says the critical consensus.
