Insights and speculations from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's MW2/Warzone reveal

Despite early rumors that 2023 would be the first break in a nearly two-decade-long tradition, Call of Duty is getting a new entry this year, and it appears that all of the previous leaks are accurate. Over the last few months, prominent Call of Duty leakers have turned to the internet to propagate a slew of speculations, all pointing to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare 2. And, with both Sledgehammer Games—the firm rumored to be working on the sequel—and Activision providing witty teases, It appears that this year’s entry will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and a revelation might be just around the corner.

The most recent, and most incriminating, leak for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 occurred just a week ago, when a can of Monster energy drink allegedly bearing the new Modern Warfare 3 logo was seen in the wild. Activision, unable to hide from it any longer, uploaded an image on social media mocking the leak and titled it “We’ll share even more next week,” implying that a Modern Warfare 3 announcement will take place in the following days. (Diastat) While Activision might always pull a surprise, there are a few things that fans can look forward to seeing during the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 unveiling.

What to expect from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s MW2/Warzone reveal

Call of Duty enthusiasts went to Call of Duty: Warzone in August 2021 to watch a teaser for the franchise’s impending mainline release. During an in-game event, players were treated to a small 1-minute clip that displayed several WW2-era environments and verified the game’s title as Call of Duty: Vanguard, before stating that a complete reveal will be coming just a few days later. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 used the same marketing tactic, with Activision and Infinity Ward releasing a minute-long teaser trailer in early June 2022 and revealing a complete reveal a few days later.

For 2023’s Call of Duty entry, presumably the long-rumored Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, this teaser will most likely take place within Call of Duty: Warzone, as it did with Vanguard in 2021. Activision foreshadowed a limited-time event that would reveal the next Call of Duty in the current Season 5 update for MW2 and Warzone, and it appears that time has already come.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer

Fans should expect an announcement from Activision or Sledgehammer in the coming week confirming the date and timing of a Modern Warfare 3 reveal inside Warzone. When the time comes, this reveal event will most likely feature a teaser trailer for the game, which will most likely be roughly one minute long, exactly like the previous Call of Duty entries. This clip will most likely serve as a quick review of all the game’s key aspects, including a very brief glimpse at Modern Warfare 3’s narrative mode, multiplayer component, and possibly even the reported undead element.

The one-minute Modern Warfare 3 teaser will almost certainly try to pack a lot in, leaving fans with much to talk about after the event. Finally, near the end of the teaser, fans may expect to see the game’s official title, as well as confirmation of its developer and possibly a date for the game’s imminent full reveal. If fans are really lucky, this teaser could end with a verified release date for the game, though Sledgehammer may hold this for the complete unveiling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s plot

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s plot is rumored to include Makarov in the rebooted franchise. In the original Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3, the figure was a really nasty villain, sparking World War 3 by framing the United States for slaughter in a Russian airport. In the relaunched tale, it’s unclear what Makarov’s aim is, but the No Russian narrative was suggested at the end of the last game.
