Nintendo Unveils ‘Talking Flower,’ a Chatty Companion for Mario Fans: All About It

Talking Flower

Nintendo has never been shy about blending playfulness with the unexpected. From cardboard-powered Labo kits to fitness games disguised as RPGs, the company has a long history of turning “why?” into “why not?” Its latest reveal fits squarely in that tradition. Meet the Talking Flower, a small, chatty toy inspired by the animated flora from the Super Mario universe. First teased during a Nintendo Direct showcase last September, the device left fans puzzled. Was it a smart speaker? A game accessory? A novelty desk toy?

Now, Nintendo has filled in the blanks. The Talking Flower is exactly what it sounds like—and a little more.

What Is Nintendo’s Talking Flower?

The Talking Flower is a standalone interactive toy designed primarily for Mario fans and collectors. It doesn’t connect to a console, unlock game content, or track your steps. Instead, it exists to do one thing well: talk to you.

At random intervals—roughly once an hour—the flower blurts out musings, observations, or gently surreal commentary. Think less “virtual assistant” and more “sentient houseplant with opinions.”

Some example phrases include:

  • “Sometimes it’s nice to space out.”
  • “Is it weird for flowers to talk?”

The result is a toy that feels more like ambient personality than utility—something that sits on a desk or shelf and occasionally reminds you it’s there.

How Does the Talking Flower Work?

The toy keeps things deliberately simple.

Button-based interaction

There’s a single button that controls most interactions:

  • Press once: Triggers a random spoken phrase on demand.
  • Hold the button: Temporarily silences the flower if you need quiet time.

Nintendo has avoided touchscreens, apps, or voice commands, which keeps the experience accessible—and very on-brand.

Scheduled and random speech

In addition to hourly chatter, the Talking Flower can be programmed to speak at specific times of day. For example:

  • A cheerful greeting in the morning
  • A “goodnight” message in the evening

Some phrases are also time-sensitive, meaning what they say can change depending on when you hear it.

Language Support: A Global Talking Flower

Nintendo is launching the Talking Flower with support for 11 languages, including:

  • English
  • Italian
  • Japanese

This multilingual approach suggests Nintendo sees the toy as more than a niche novelty. It’s designed for global fans, collectors, and families who may want a playful object that works in their preferred language.

Music and Audio Features

The Talking Flower doesn’t just speak—it also plays music.

While Nintendo hasn’t released a full track list, the inclusion of music adds another layer of personality. Combined with spoken phrases, it allows the toy to function as a kind of ambient sound companion, similar in spirit (though not function) to smart displays or digital pets.

Crucially, all feedback is audio-only. There are:

  • No LEDs
  • No screens
  • No visual alerts

This design choice reinforces the toy’s low-distraction appeal.

Temperature Awareness Without a Screen

One of the more surprising features is a built-in room temperature sensor.

Instead of displaying numbers or colors, the Talking Flower simply comments when it notices changes in the environment. It’s a subtle touch, but one that fits Nintendo’s philosophy of expressing data through character rather than dashboards.

Battery status works the same way. When power runs low, the flower doesn’t flash or beep—it tells you.

This approach makes the toy feel more “alive” than mechanical, even though it’s doing fairly simple sensing behind the scenes.

Who Is the Talking Flower For?

The Talking Flower isn’t trying to compete with smart speakers or interactive robots. Its appeal is narrower—and arguably more intentional.

Likely audiences include:

  • Mario fans and Nintendo collectors looking for a display piece with personality
  • Desk toy enthusiasts who enjoy ambient, low-effort interaction
  • Gift buyers searching for something playful but not screen-based
  • Families with kids, thanks to its simplicity and multilingual support

At $34.99, it sits in impulse-buy territory rather than premium gadget pricing.

Pricing, Pre-Orders, and Release Date

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Price: $34.99
  • Pre-orders: Available now
  • Official launch date: March 12
  • Where to buy:
    • Nintendo’s online store
    • Major retailers such as GameStop

Why Nintendo Is Betting on a Toy Like This

From a business perspective, the Talking Flower is notable not because of what it does—but because of what it doesn’t try to do.

It doesn’t require:

  • A Nintendo Switch
  • An internet connection
  • An app ecosystem

Instead, it leans into character-driven hardware, a space where Nintendo has historically thrived. Much like Amiibo figures or classic alarm clocks with Nintendo IP, the Talking Flower extends the Mario universe into everyday life.

It also reflects a broader trend: consumers showing renewed interest in low-tech, personality-rich objects that sit somewhere between decor and gadget.

What We Still Don’t Know

Despite the detailed reveal, some questions remain:

  • How many total phrases does the Talking Flower have?
  • Will Nintendo release updates or additional phrase packs?
  • Are there plans for other characters or color variants?

Given Nintendo’s track record, none of these possibilities can be ruled out.

TL;DR

  • Nintendo’s Talking Flower is a standalone toy inspired by Super Mario.
  • It speaks randomly every hour, with optional scheduled messages.
  • Supports 11 languages, plays music, and comments on room temperature.
  • No screens, no apps—everything is audio-based.
  • Priced at $34.99, launching March 12, with pre-orders available now.
