Rockstar surprises fans with unannounced release of GTA VI’s second trailer
Rockstar Games on Tuesday quietly released the much-anticipated second trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, catching fans off guard just days after the studio confirmed the game’s official launch has been moved to May 2026.
Originally expected in 2025, the game’s release was pushed back, prompting a wave of speculation across fan communities. But according to a purported Rockstar insider, the delay has little to do with the game’s story mode — and everything to do with the studio’s ambitions for its online experience.
New trailer sheds light on central characters Jason and Lucia
The new trailer dives deeper into the narrative of protagonists Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s official synopsis paints a gritty picture:
“Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”
The visuals and story beats introduced in Trailer 2 suggest a complex, high-stakes narrative grounded in modern-day America, wrapped in Rockstar’s signature satire and high-octane drama.
Insider: “The story mode is done”
In the wake of the delay announcement, rumors circulated that the game’s campaign might still be under development. But an alleged Rockstar employee took to Reddit to shut down those claims.
“The story mode for GTA 6 has been fully finished and playable since January 2025 as I’m aware of. That’s not speculation. I’ve seen it. It’s not ‘almost done.’ It’s not ‘still being tested.’ It’s finished. Fully playable from beginning to end. The missions are there. The characters are there. The single player world is complete. And it’s not being delayed because it’s broken. If anything, it’s better than what most people are expecting,” the post read.
The source claims that not only is the single-player component finished, but it also exceeds expectations internally.
Online mode overhaul at the heart of the delay
According to the same source, the true reason for the delay lies in Rockstar’s efforts to overhaul its online infrastructure — an area the company sees as pivotal to the game’s long-term success.
“The real reason for the delay is online. Full stop. Executives are obsessively focused on getting GTA Online right this time. They saw firsthand what GTA online became for GTA 5 and how much revenue it brought in long term. This time the stakes are way higher. They don’t just want a working online mode, they want a platform that is nothing but perfection,” the insider wrote.
Rockstar is reportedly bracing for a massive influx of players in the opening days of launch, shaping every technical decision around scalability and performance.
“We already had our internal launch yield forecast, and the expectation is somewhere between 35 to 40 million players accessing GTA 6 online within the first 72 hours of its release. That number is driving almost every technical and infrastructure decision right now. There’s a lot of internal pressure to avoid what happened in 2013. No crashes, no major bugs, no login issues. They want a strong pipeline already in place before launch.”
A platform, not just a game
If these reports are accurate, Grand Theft Auto VI isn’t just a game but a foundation for what Rockstar hopes will be a long-standing online platform. Given the massive success of GTA Online, which remains one of the most profitable entertainment products of all time, the studio appears determined to avoid the growing pains that plagued its predecessor’s launch more than a decade ago.
As the countdown to May 2026 continues, fans now have more clarity on what’s fueling the delay — and what Rockstar is willing to gamble to ensure GTA VI not only lives up to its legacy but redefines it.
