From a swollen jaw to a life-changing diagnosis
Initially, the man sought relief from tooth pain and underwent a tooth extraction. However, his jaw began to swell significantly afterward. Concerned, he returned to his doctor, who performed a CT scan. The results revealed a lesion in the jaw, prompting further tests that confirmed metastatic prostate cancer.
The link between prostate cancer and jaw metastases
Metastatic prostate cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from the prostate to other parts of the body. According to Dr. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon, the jawbone’s rich blood supply and active bone marrow make it a potential site for metastasis, though such cases are rare.
“Prostate cancer, like many other cancers, can metastasize to the jaw,” explained Dr. Bozic. “While it’s uncommon, when it does occur, it’s often an indicator that the cancer has spread widely.”
Symptoms are often mistaken for dental issues
One of the challenges with jaw metastases is that symptoms can mimic common dental problems, making diagnosis difficult even for experienced dentists.
“Patients may experience persistent swelling in the jaw, pain, loose teeth without an obvious cause, or delayed healing after dental extractions,” Dr. Bozic said. In some cases, patients report numbness or tingling in the jaw, which may signal nerve involvement.
In this case, the post-extraction swelling became a critical clue that led to the diagnosis.
