Food is a universal emotion. However, some food items are common in some places and banned in others. Here are five banned foods in the United States.
Unpasteurized milk
Milk is an important part of their diet for humans across the world. Especially kids. However, the sale of unpasteurized milk is banned. This is because it kills dangerous illness-causing bacteria. Pasteurization is a process that kills such bacteria by heating milk for a certain period and temperature. The ban was imposed since some people preferred to drink raw milk. However, some states allow the sale of raw milk on farms but, dairies across the country are banned from doing so.
The most surprising banned food: Kinder Surprise Eggs
80 years ago, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned sales of food products with non-nutritive objects embedded in them. unfortunately, the famous Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs that are famous among kids in Europe and Asia fall under this category. The hollow egg-shaped candy is a well-loved treat. As of 2018, the original surprise eggs are still now allowed to be sold or imported to the US. However, there’s an alternative treat, Kinder Joy, where the packaging separates the toy and chocolate.
Horse meat
The sale of horsemeat is banned because the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) does not allow it under the Federal Meat Inspection Act. The FSIS is also not allowed to fund or inspect horse slaughters aimed at human consumption. However, eating horse meat is not illegal in the US. But, it is illegal to slaughter horses. Hence it’s extremely challenging.
Haggis
This is another challenging dish. Why? Well, haggis is not banned but, the primary ingredient used to make the dish is. The national dish of Scotland is made with sheep stomachs. It is then stuffed with several delicacies including animal lungs.
According to FSIS, lungs are banned for consumption as they can contain gastrointestinal fluids from slaughtering. These fluids can increase the risk of food-borne diseases.
Foie Gras
Here’s another delicacy on the list of banned foods!
Foie Gras surely sounds like a mouthwatering French delicacy. Despite it, you might think otherwise once you hear how it’s prepared. The dish translates as fatty liver in English and is exactly that.
Geese or ducks are force-fed with large amounts of food through a tube until their livers are eight times the normal size. California has banned the dish for its terrible animal treatment. New York has decided to ban it from 2022. Other US cities will likely follow this ban.
