Think Twice Before Flying In Leggings Or Tight Jeans, Experts Warn: Here's Why

Why do your flight clothes matter more than you think?

Long-haul flights are uncomfortable enough as it is—cramped seats, dry air, and limited legroom. But according to health experts, what you wear on a plane can make things significantly worse. Specifically, they warn against wearing tight-fitting clothes like leggings and skinny jeans during air travel, citing serious health concerns.

While leggings are often viewed as a go-to comfort outfit for flights, medical professionals are flagging them and similarly tight garments—as risky choices when you’re spending hours seated at high altitude.

What’s the health risk of wearing tight clothes on a plane?

Reduced blood circulation

Dr. Hugh Pabarue, a vein specialist with Metro Vein Centers, told HuffPost that clothing choices during flights can “significantly impact our circulation.” When you wear tight garments, especially around the legs and waist, it can reduce blood flow. This restriction becomes a bigger problem on planes, where passengers often remain sedentary for long periods.

Restricted circulation increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)—a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, often in the legs. DVT is dangerous because these clots can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal.

Nerve compression syndromes

Dr. Pabarue also highlighted the risk of conditions like compartment syndrome and meralgia paresthetica. The former occurs when pressure builds in a muscle compartment, potentially damaging nerves and muscles. The latter is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, resulting in numbness, tingling, or burning pain in the outer thigh.

Tight waistbands and snug jeans exacerbate these issues, especially when the body swells slightly at higher altitudes—a natural response to cabin pressure changes.

Why are leggings and skinny jeans particularly risky?

Leggings may feel comfortable, but they can still compress

Leggings, especially those made with synthetic compression fabrics, can silently restrict blood flow. Because they stretch, wearers often underestimate how snug they truly are, particularly around the calves and thighs.

Skinny jeans, on the other hand, offer little to no give. Denim is a rigid material, and when it’s tailored to hug the body tightly, it leaves even less room for swelling and movement.

Sophie O’Neill, senior stylist at PrettyLittleThing, told Express UK that “the human body swells while flying,” making tight denim a poor choice for the skies.

Sitting still makes it worse

Aircraft cabins aren’t designed for optimal mobility. Being sedentary for hours—sometimes upwards of 10 to 15 hours—means your lower limbs already face circulation challenges. Wearing clothes that compress these areas compounds the issue, raising your risk for clots and nerve impingement.

What should you wear on flights instead?

Go for loose-fitting clothes

Health professionals recommend avoiding anything that pinches at the waist, thighs, or calves. Instead, opt for:

  • Loose-fitting pants like joggers, linen trousers, or wide-leg sweatpants
  • Soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, or modal blends
  • Stretchy waistbands that adapt to mid-flight body changes

Loose clothes allow your body to expand naturally during the flight and help maintain normal circulation.

Compression stockings: The safe kind of tight

Dr. Peter J. Pappas, a vascular surgeon with the Center for Vein Restoration, told The Mirror that medical-grade compression stockings are an excellent alternative to leggings. Unlike fashion leggings, these garments apply graduated pressure, promoting upward blood flow and preventing pooling in the lower limbs.

They’re particularly beneficial for:

  • People with a family history of clotting disorders
  • Older adults
  • Pregnant travelers
  • Anyone on a long-haul or overnight flight

Tip: If you tend to wear tight jeans or leggings for their style, consider pairing compression stockings under loose joggers or baggy jeans for a safer, more travel-friendly outfit.

Are there other travel habits that can help?

Absolutely. While wardrobe choices are a big part of the equation, you can also minimize risk by:

  • Walking the aisle every 1–2 hours
  • Flexing your feet and legs while seated
  • Staying hydrated—avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Elevating your feet if possible (carry-on bags make great footrests)

These small movements keep your blood flowing and muscles active, reducing the likelihood of clot formation or nerve compression.

What about children or short-haul travelers?

The risk of DVT or nerve issues is significantly lower in short-haul flights (under 4 hours), especially for younger passengers with no underlying conditions. However, comfort still matters. Encouraging kids and adults alike to wear soft, breathable clothes can make the experience less tiring, even on shorter routes.

Bottom line: dress smart, not just comfortably

Wearing something stylish or seemingly comfortable like leggings may seem harmless, but tight clothes can actually work against your health while flying. With circulation concerns, swelling, and the risk of blood clots all at play, it’s better to err on the side of loose, supportive, and breathable.

If you’re a frequent flyer, consider investing in compression stockings and creating a go-to “flight outfit” that puts wellness first.

Avoid wearing tight clothes like leggings or skinny jeans on planes. Experts warn that these garments restrict blood flow, increasing the risk of conditions like deep vein thrombosis and nerve compression. Instead, wear loose-fitting clothes and consider compression stockings for safer, more comfortable travel
