On Wednesday, media reports revealed that Chinese researchers were successful in creating the most detailed, comprehensive geological map of the Moon. The map delves into the details of several important carters and structures. Moreover, this topographic map is one of a kind and treads on uncharted territory. Experts reveal that this is the most detailed map to date and will aid in conducting more research. The creation was first published in ‘Science Bulletin, a Chinese science journal.
“China has released a new comprehensive geologic map of the Moon to a scale of 1:2500000, the most detailed to date. The map includes 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 rock types, and 14 types of structures, providing abundant information about the geology of the Moon and its evolution,” revealed Chinese national broadcaster CGTN. Additionally, “it is expected to contribute greatly to scientific research, exploration, and landing site selection on the Moon,” added the report.
More on the new map of the moon
The “high-resolution topographic map” is based on data collected by Chang’e. Chang’e is the Chinese lunar exploration project, attributed to collecting data based on various research. The Institute of Geochemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences spearheaded the project of mapping the Moon.
In addition to a total of 12,341 impact carters, it also includes 17 rock types, and 81 impact basis. Additionally, it includes 14 types of structures, providing more information about lunar geology and evolution. Moreover, back in 2020, the USGS Astrogeology Science Center released a map with a scale of 1:5,000,000.
