SpaceX CEO outlines existential rationale for interplanetary future in latest interview
In a wide-ranging interview aired Tuesday on Fox News, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk laid out his most impassioned case yet for colonizing Mars — framing it not as a technological ambition, but a moral imperative for the survival of life itself. Calling Mars a form of “life insurance” for humanity, Musk reiterated his belief that Earth’s days are ultimately numbered due to the long-term expansion of the sun.
“Mars is life insurance for life collectively,” Musk said. “So, eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the sun. The sun is gradually expanding, and so we do at some point need to be a multi-planet civilization because Earth will be incinerated.”
Beyond footprints: Musk envisions a thriving Martian city
Musk emphasized that his Mars project goes far beyond simply landing astronauts or planting flags. Instead, the Tesla and SpaceX chief envisions a fully self-sustaining human city — one capable of surviving even if Earth can no longer send support.
“The fundamental fork in the road of destiny [is] that Mars is sufficiently self-sustaining and can grow by itself if the resupply ships from Earth stop coming for any reason, whether that is because civilization died with a bang or a whimper,” he said. “If the resupply ships are necessary for Mars to survive, then we have not created life insurance.”
For Musk, the tipping point comes when Mars can thrive without Earth, a milestone he says will mark a transformative moment for the fate of all life. “We’ve not created life insurance for life collectively. So that’s the key point in the future where [the] destiny of life, as we know it, will forever be affected, is when Mars becomes self-sustaining.”
Musk addresses Trump support in a light-hearted moment
The conversation also veered into politics. Asked by Lara Trump whether he regrets his previous support for former President Donald Trump, Musk responded with a moment of levity: “Yes… No… cut that part… I was trying to be funny… You caught me!”
He went on to clarify his stance, emphasizing the need for stable governance and national progress. “I think it is essential for Trump to win so that America remained a great… that we would reach greater heights,” he said. “Some very basic things needed to happen — secure borders, and safe cities where we can walk around without fear of being attacked. We need to strive to do great things to exceed what we’ve done in the past.”
