Elon Musk reveals cause of SpaceX Starship crash into Indian Ocean

Starship test ends in failure but provides critical data

Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX encountered another setback in its Starship program on Sunday when the uncrewed rocket exploded over the Indian Ocean just 30 minutes after launching from Texas. Despite the failure, Musk emphasized that the mission yielded valuable insights for future flights.

The Starship, a key component of Musk’s vision to colonize Mars, was supposed to deploy mock satellites after liftoff. However, the rocket’s payload door malfunctioned, preventing the release. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Musk acknowledged the issues but praised the progress made.

“Starship made it to the scheduled ship engine cutoff, so big improvement over last flight! Also, no significant loss of heat shield tiles during ascent. Leaks caused loss of main tank pressure during the coast and re-entry phase. Lot of good data to review,” Musk wrote.

Musk promises faster launch cadence for future tests

Despite the crash, Musk remains optimistic about the program’s trajectory. He announced plans to accelerate testing, targeting a new Starship launch every three to four weeks for the next three flights.

“Launch cadence for the next 3 flights will be faster – approximately one every 3 to 4 weeks,” he said, congratulating the SpaceX team for their efforts.

Musk was scheduled to deliver a major update on his interplanetary ambitions in a livestreamed speech titled “The Road to Making Life Multiplanetary” following the test. However, hours after the launch, the presentation had yet to take place.

The future of Starship and Musk’s Mars ambitions

Standing at 400 feet (122 meters), the Starship is the cornerstone of Musk’s goal to establish a human presence on Mars. Designed to be fully reusable, the rocket aims to drastically reduce the cost of space travel, making interplanetary colonization feasible.

Sunday’s launch saw the Starship surpass the flight duration of two previous explosive attempts earlier this year. The upper-stage vessel reached space atop a reused booster—a milestone demonstrating reusability. However, SpaceX lost contact with the 232-foot lower-stage booster during descent, causing it to crash into the sea instead of executing a controlled splashdown.

Meanwhile, the Starship itself entered suborbital space but began spinning uncontrollably about 30 minutes into the mission. The malfunction followed the failure of its “Pez” dispenser-like payload mechanism, which was supposed to release mock Starlink satellites.

Upgrades and long-term goals

SpaceX has stated that this year’s Starship models feature significant design improvements over earlier prototypes. Thousands of employees are working to refine the rocket, which is intended to carry large satellite batches, return humans to the moon, and eventually transport astronauts to Mars.

While the latest test ended in failure, Musk and his team remain focused on gathering data to ensure future missions bring them closer to making humanity a multi-planetary species.
