FIFA 2026 Golden Boot Race: Messi Leads, But Mbappé, Haaland and Vinícius Jr Are Closing In

The race for the FIFA 2026 Golden Boot is heating up as the group stage nears its conclusion. With the knockout rounds still ahead, several of the world’s biggest stars are already building impressive goal tallies and positioning themselves as favorites to finish as the tournament’s top scorer.

Currently, the leaderboard is headed by Lionel Messi, whose red-hot form has helped Argentina make a strong start to its World Cup campaign. However, challengers including Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Vinícius Júnior remain firmly in contention.

What is the FIFA Golden Boot?

The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the FIFA World Cup. Goals scored during penalty shootouts do not count toward the award.

In the event of a tie, FIFA uses assists and, if necessary, minutes played as tiebreakers.

With the expanded 48-team tournament providing more matches than previous editions, forwards have additional opportunities to boost their goal totals.

Lionel Messi leads the standings

1. Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 5 goals

The Argentine captain has enjoyed a sensational start to the tournament, scoring five goals in just two group-stage matches.

Messi opened his campaign with a hat trick against Algeria before adding two more goals against Austria. With Argentina still scheduled to face Jordan in its final group match, he has a strong chance to extend his lead before the knockout stage begins.

At 39, Messi is once again proving why he remains one of football’s most influential players.

Vinícius Júnior continues Brazil’s charge

2. Vinícius Júnior (Brazil) – 4 goals

Vinícius Júnior has been Brazil’s standout performer during the group stage.

The winger has scored in all three of Brazil’s matches:

  • 1 goal vs. Morocco
  • 1 goal vs. Haiti
  • 2 goals vs. Scotland

His consistency has been crucial in helping the five-time world champions advance to the Round of 32. Unlike some rivals who still have a group-stage match remaining, Vinícius has already completed all three group games, making his current tally even more impressive.

Kylian Mbappé remains a major threat

3. Kylian Mbappé (France) – 4 goals

Few players enter major tournaments with higher expectations than Kylian Mbappé, and the French star has lived up to the hype.

Mbappé has scored four goals in only two matches:

  • 2 goals vs. Senegal
  • 2 goals vs. Iraq

France still has a group-stage fixture against Norway, giving Mbappé another opportunity to close the gap on Messi. Given his pace, finishing ability, and France’s attacking strength, many observers consider him among the strongest Golden Boot contenders.

Erling Haaland keeps pace

4. Erling Haaland (Norway) – 4 goals

Erling Haaland has matched Mbappé’s goal output with four strikes from two matches.

His goals have come in:

  • 2 goals vs. Iraq
  • 2 goals vs. Senegal

Norway’s final group match against France could prove decisive in the Golden Boot race. Haaland’s physical presence and clinical finishing make him a constant scoring threat, particularly as the tournament enters the knockout rounds.

Who is best positioned to win the Golden Boot?

At this stage, Messi has the advantage because he leads the standings with five goals and still has another group-stage match to play.

However, several factors suggest the race remains wide open:

  • Mbappé and Haaland have scored four goals in only two games.
  • Both France and Norway are expected to rely heavily on their star forwards.
  • Knockout-stage performances often determine the eventual winner.
  • Teams that advance deeper into the tournament provide more scoring opportunities.

The road ahead

The knockout rounds frequently reshape the Golden Boot race. A single hat trick or standout performance can dramatically alter the leaderboard.

For now, Messi sits atop the standings, but with Mbappé, Haaland, and Vinícius Jr. all within striking distance, the battle for FIFA 2026’s most prestigious individual scoring award is only beginning.

If current form continues, fans could witness one of the closest Golden Boot races in World Cup history.
