How did Hulk Hogan die?

Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his Clearwater, Florida, home on the morning of July 24, 2025. First responders were dispatched around 9:51 AM local time, where Hogan was found unresponsive and treated by Clearwater Fire & Rescue before being transported to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Though rumors had swirled in recent months about his declining health, with speculation that Hogan was “on his deathbed” following a neck surgery in May, his wife, Sky, had recently denied claims that he was in a coma. She insisted his heart was “strong” just weeks before his sudden passing.

A press conference by local authorities is expected later today, which may shed more light on the events leading up to his death.

Why Hulk Hogan mattered to wrestling and pop culture

He made wrestling mainstream family entertainment

Before Hulk Hogan, professional wrestling existed on the fringes, a gritty, regional affair largely followed by adult male fans. That changed the moment Terry Bollea transformed into “Hulk Hogan,” a charismatic, muscle-bound hero who embodied American bravado in the 1980s.

When he defeated the Iron Sheik in 1984 to win the World Heavyweight Championship, he ignited “Hulkamania,” a fan frenzy unlike anything wrestling had seen. Wearing his signature red-and-yellow gear, ripping his shirt, and urging fans to “say your prayers and take your vitamins,” Hogan brought children and families into the wrestling fold. Wrestling was no longer just a sport; it became a performance, drama, and a cultural movement.

He redefined the hero and later embraced the villain

In one of the most iconic heel turns in wrestling history, Hogan shocked fans in 1996 by forming the New World Order (NWO), rebranding himself as “Hollywood Hulk Hogan.” No longer the squeaky-clean superhero, he played the cocky villain with uncanny ease, drawing even more attention to himself and reinvigorating a then-struggling WCW (World Championship Wrestling).

This reinvention made Hulk Hogan a figure of continued relevance, proving that he wasn’t just a product of the ’80s — he could evolve with the times.

What were Hulk Hogan’s most iconic moments?

  • WrestleMania III (1987): Hogan body-slammed the 520-pound Andre the Giant in front of 93,000 fans — a defining moment in WWE history.
  • WrestleMania X8 (2002): Hogan clashed with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a generational showdown, uniting old and new fans.
  • Ultimate Warrior feud (1990): Their clash at WrestleMania VI symbolized a torch-passing moment in wrestling lore.
  • Randy Savage rivalry and alliance: Hogan’s on-again, off-again bond with “Macho Man” Randy Savage created some of wrestling’s most memorable narratives.

Hogan’s influence beyond the ring

He became a household name through Hollywood and reality TV

Hulk Hogan crossed over into mainstream entertainment, starting with his 1982 role as Thunderlips in Rocky III. He later starred in films like No Holds Barred (1989), Suburban Commando (1991), and Mr. Nanny (1993), making him one of the few wrestlers to successfully break into Hollywood.

He also fronted the VH1 reality show Hogan Knows Best (2005–2007), giving fans a look at his family life — including then-wife Linda and children Brooke and Nick. The show was part of a wave of early 2000s reality television and boosted Hogan’s profile with a new generation.

He remained culturally relevant into his 70s

Even in the final years of his life, Hogan stayed in the spotlight. In May 2025, he launched Real American Freestyle, an amateur wrestling league set to debut on Fox Nation on August 30. And in July 2024, he made headlines with a dramatic appearance at the Republican National Convention, infusing politics with trademark Hogan theatrics.

Controversy and redemption: A complicated legacy

Despite his larger-than-life persona, Hogan’s career was not without turmoil.

In 2015, he was ousted from the WWE Hall of Fame after a leaked recording revealed him making racist remarks during a private, secretly taped conversation. The comments, captured during a sexual encounter, were published by Gawker, prompting a public reckoning for the star.

Hulk Hogan subsequently sued Gawker, and the lawsuit, funded in part by tech billionaire Peter Thiel, resulted in a $140 million jury verdict, effectively bankrupting the media company. In 2020, WWE reinstated him into its Hall of Fame, this time as part of the NWO faction, reflecting the organization’s complicated relationship with one of its biggest stars.

How wrestling fans and the entertainment world are reacting

As news of Hogan’s death spread, tributes poured in from across the wrestling and entertainment industries. WWE stars, both past and present, remembered him not just as a performer but as a mentor and trailblazer. Celebrities who grew up watching Hogan—or who worked with him—shared emotional messages on social media.

Given Hogan’s lasting impact, it’s likely that WWE and other wrestling organizations will hold tribute segments in upcoming broadcasts. A televised memorial event could also be in the works.

What comes next: Hulk Hogan’s posthumous legacy

While details about Hogan’s funeral or memorial services have yet to be released, there’s little doubt that his legacy will endure.

He wasn’t just a champion in the ring—he was a pop culture force who brought wrestling into American living rooms, influenced a generation of performers, and etched himself into the broader mythos of American entertainment.

Though controversy tarnished his image for a time, Hogan’s contributions to the evolution of professional wrestling are undeniable. His story is one of reinvention, excess, redemption, and, above all, spectacle.

Whether you cheered him or booed him, there’s no denying one thing: Hulk Hogan changed the game.
