India’s Oval Win By 6 Runs Among Test Cricket’s Rarest Finishes: Here's Why

In one of the most dramatic finishes in Test cricket history, India edged out England by just six runs at The Oval, sealing a win that will be remembered as a modern classic. The match concluded the fiercely contested 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, ending the five-match series at 2–2.

Beyond the thrilling nature of the victory, the result shattered several long-standing records and established new milestones for Indian cricket—particularly in the context of their performances away from home.

How Did the Final Test Unfold?

England, chasing 374 for victory, began the final day at 339 for 6, needing just 35 more runs. India, on the other hand, required four wickets. What followed was a nerve-wracking session of high-quality Test cricket.

  • Mohammed Siraj was the star, completing a five-wicket haul, with three coming on the final day.
  • Prasidh Krishna offered crucial support, ending with four wickets in the fourth innings.

Despite England’s strong middle-order fightback, India’s bowling attack held its nerve, sparking scenes of jubilation as they secured the win by just six runs.

Why This Win Matters: A Once-in-a-Century Feat

India became only the third team in history to defeat England in England by a margin of fewer than 10 runs, a feat last achieved over a century ago.

This was India’s first-ever Test win by a margin under 10 runs, breaking their previous record set in 2004, when they defeated Australia by 13 runs in Mumbai.

What makes this even more significant is that India had never won an away Test by fewer than 31 runs until this match.

Breaking a Series Finale Curse

India also broke another jinx: this is the first time they have won the final match of a five or six-Test series. In the 17 previous such instances, India had drawn seven and lost 10.

What Does This Mean for the Series?

  • The 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended in a 2-2 draw, a fair reflection of the closely matched series.
  • It marked the second consecutive drawn series in England, after the 2021-22 contest also ended 2-2.
  • It follows a dominant 4-1 home series win for India in 2024 under Rohit Sharma.

The Bigger Picture

This win doesn’t just reflect India’s growing strength in overseas conditions—it also speaks to the team’s grit under pressure. With a relatively young squad led by Shubman Gill, India pulled off a performance that rivals their best away victories.
