Jalen Ramsey traded to Steelers, Dolphins reunite with Minkah Fitzpatrick in blockbuster deal

What’s the trade, and why does it matter?

In one of the most talked-about NFL trades of the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins. In exchange, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick returns to Miami — the team that originally drafted him — as part of a headline-grabbing player swap that also includes tight end Jonnu Smith, and draft picks.

The trade signals a strategic reshaping of both rosters, with Pittsburgh going all-in on a Super Bowl-caliber defense and Miami attempting to reclaim stability in its secondary.

Full trade details

Here’s what each team gets:

Pittsburgh Steelers receive:

  • CB Jalen Ramsey
  • TE Jonnu Smith
  • 2027 7th-round pick

Miami Dolphins receive:

  • S Minkah Fitzpatrick
  • 2027 5th-round pick

The move is more than just a talent swap — it’s a high-stakes gamble involving cap management, team chemistry, and championship aspirations.

Why did Miami trade Jalen Ramsey?

Ramsey’s time in Miami was always shadowed by uncertainty. Despite being the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback under a deal extending through 2028, his $16.6 million cap hit for 2025 became a looming obstacle for the Dolphins.

Earlier this spring, both sides mutually agreed to part ways, and Ramsey skipped mandatory minicamp amid trade rumors. Miami had quietly shopped him for weeks before finalizing the post–June 1 trade, a date critical for cap-related restructuring.

While the Los Angeles Rams were previously viewed as favorites to bring Ramsey back, Pittsburgh emerged as the surprise suitor, offering a high-value player in return — and eating Ramsey’s significant contract.

Why did the Steelers want Ramsey?

The Steelers have been aggressive this offseason. With Darius Slay already added to the cornerback room and Aaron Rodgers signed to lead the offense, Pittsburgh is clearly operating in win-now mode.

Jalen Ramsey — even in a down year — brings experience, leadership, and elite coverage ability. Though he missed the 2024 Pro Bowl (his first absence since 2016), he still recorded two interceptions and showed flashes of his peak form.

By pairing Ramsey with Slay and bolstering their secondary behind a strong pass rush, the Steelers now field one of the most dangerous defenses in the AFC. This move also signals the organization’s urgency to break an eight-year playoff win drought under longtime head coach Mike Tomlin.

What does this mean for Minkah Fitzpatrick?

For Fitzpatrick, it’s a full-circle moment. Drafted by the Dolphins 11th overall in 2018, Fitzpatrick played just 18 games in Miami before being traded to Pittsburgh in 2019, where he blossomed into a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro.

Over 106 games, he’s tallied 608 tackles and 20 interceptions, becoming a fixture of the Steelers’ defense. Now, he returns to Miami as a seasoned leader with elite ball skills and football IQ.

Given the Dolphins’ secondary inconsistencies and injuries in recent years, Fitzpatrick’s presence should help stabilize a unit that lacked consistency — both in communication and scheme execution — in 2024.

Is this a win for both teams?

Yes — with caveats.

For Pittsburgh:

  • Pros: Acquires an elite cornerback, adds veteran depth at tight end, and solidifies a potentially top-three defense.
  • Cons: Takes on a massive salary; Ramsey is 30 and may have already peaked.

For Miami:

  • Pros: Recoups a proven defensive leader in Fitzpatrick, gains salary cap flexibility, and adds a mid-round pick.
  • Cons: Loses one of the NFL’s top corners; trade may be seen as reactive to contract mismanagement.

From a roster-building perspective, both front offices appear to be playing smart, forward-thinking football — prioritizing fit, cap health, and identity over name-brand star power.

What’s next?

For the Steelers:

They’ll now look to integrate Ramsey into a complex defensive scheme led by new defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who has familiarity with both Fitzpatrick and Miami’s defensive personnel.

This puts Pittsburgh in an aggressive position for 2025, joining AFC contenders like Kansas City, Baltimore, and Cincinnati in what’s shaping up to be a bruising playoff race.

For the Dolphins:

The focus now shifts to reloading rather than rebuilding. With Fitzpatrick back in the fold and Tua Tagovailoa leading a high-powered offense, Miami remains in the postseason conversation. But to contend, they’ll need younger corners like Cam Smith and Kader Kohou to step up.
