Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one tennis player, is back in detention in Australia again on Saturday (January 15). It was after the government officials revoked his visa for the second time. The unvaccinated player was supposedly a public health risk.
The controversy surrounding Djokovic’s refusal to receive the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine has hindered his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam title.
Australian court heard the visa dispute. Then, it has become a major roadblock to his participation in the Australian Open, the year’s opening Grand Slam.
Anti-vaccination sentiment
On Friday, Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke canceled Djokovic’s visa. Thereby, claiming that his continued presence could lead to an “increase in anti-vaccination sentiment” or perhaps “civil unrest.”
According to court documents, the 34-year-old Serbian is being held at a Melbourne location while his appeal against deportation is considered.
Australian officials said Djokovic’s continued presence in the country “may foster anti-vaccination sentiment”; also demanded his removal in a separate court case.

Players also complained that the Djokovic drama was overshadowing the year’s first Grand Slam. Defending Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka termed it “unfortunate” and “sad.”
“I think it’s an unfortunate situation. He’s such a great player and it’s kind of sad that some people might remember (him) in this way,” she said on Saturday; two days before the start of the tournament.
Rafael Nadal, on the other side, slammed Djokovic on Saturday (Jan 15). He says, “The Australian Open is much more important than any player.”
“Australian Open will be a great Australian Open with or without him,” Nadal told reporters at Melbourne Park ahead of the Grand Slam’s start on Monday.
