Novak Djokovic confirmed on Monday that he intends to participate at Wimbledon next month. He asserted that following his first-round triumph at Roland Garros. The ATP and WTA administrative organizations in sports have declared that players from Russia and Belarus will not participate in the tournament. However, the grand slam tournament in London, would not contribute to the global ranking points this year.
“Yes, I plan to go to Wimbledon,” said Novak after his victory over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. Last year, Djokovic won the grass competition for the sixth time. He had earlier stated that he thought the championship’s choice to exclude Russians and Belarusians was “a mistake.” He asserted that there was an opportunity for a settlement, however, instead it is a “lose-lose situation for everyone.”
The first big championship for Novak Djokovic since last September
Novak Djokovic’s first Grand Slam match in seven and a half months was better than the expectations. Djokovic began his title defense at the French Open with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Yoshihito Nishioka in less than two hours. In the first round against Roland Garros, he moved to 18-0 in his career. He hadn’t competed in a big championship since losing in the final of the US Open against Daniil Medvedev last September. Djokovic was unable to compete in the Australian Open in January due to his refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The French Open does not require vaccinations.
The ATP and WTA decided not to include Wimbledon points in global rankings. After that, numerous tennis players suggested that they would treat the grand slam competition “as a demonstration tournament”. Cameron Norrie, Britain’s finest player, has expressed concern that world-class players may not participate in Wimbledon.
