Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi Among Players Fined PKR 5 Million After T20 World Cup Exit

The fallout from Pakistan’s disappointing campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has been swift, and costly.

According to local reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has fined each player PKR 5 million following the team’s Super 8 exit from the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The decision reportedly came after Pakistan’s first-round defeat to India last month, a loss that set the tone for an underwhelming campaign under captain Salman Ali Agha.

Here’s what we know and what it means for Pakistan cricket.

Why Did the PCB Impose the PKR 5 Million Fine?

Reports from The Express Tribune indicate that PCB officials felt accountability must mirror reward.

The logic, according to sources quoted by PTI:

  • Players are financially rewarded for strong performances.
  • Therefore, poor results should also carry consequences.

The PKR 5 million fine applies to each squad member, a significant penalty given player salary structures under central contracts.

How Much Do Centrally Contracted Players Earn?

The PCB operates a four-tier central contract system.

Here’s how annual compensation breaks down:

Category A

  • Monthly salary: PKR 4.5 million
  • ICC revenue share: PKR 2.07 million

Category B

  • Monthly salary: PKR 3 million
  • ICC revenue share: PKR 1.5525 million

Category C

  • Monthly salary: PKR 1 million
  • ICC revenue share: PKR 1.035 million

Category D

  • Monthly salary: PKR 750,000
  • ICC revenue share: PKR 517,500

A PKR 5 million fine represents more than a month’s salary even for Category A players, and several months’ earnings for lower-tier contracts.

That makes the penalty more than symbolic.

Who Is Under Pressure?

The scrutiny extends beyond just the squad.

Salman Ali Agha

Captain Salman Ali Agha is reportedly at risk of losing the T20 captaincy as PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi considers overhauling the format setup.

Babar Azam

Former captain Babar Azam could also see his T20 international future reconsidered, according to sources.

Usman Khan and Others

Several players, including Usman Khan, may face the end of their T20 careers depending on the board’s review.

Head Coach Mike Hesson

Head coach Mike Hesson is also reportedly under pressure after the team failed to reach the semi-finals.

What Triggered the Backlash?

Pakistan’s campaign unraveled early.

A high-profile loss to India in Sri Lanka set off criticism from fans and analysts. By the time Pakistan exited the Super 8 stage, the narrative had hardened: this was another missed opportunity on the global stage.

For a team historically capable of volatile brilliance in T20 tournaments, falling short once again intensified public frustration.

Is Financial Punishment Common in International Cricket?

Fines for poor performance are rare at the international level.

Cricket boards typically impose penalties for:

  • Code-of-conduct violations
  • Fitness failures
  • Disciplinary breaches

Punishing players strictly for tournament results raises broader questions:

  • Does financial penalty improve performance?
  • Or does it deepen instability within the dressing room?

Historically, teams rebound more effectively through structural reform, coaching clarity, selection consistency, and role definition, rather than punitive measures alone.

What Changes Could Come Next?

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is reportedly considering a broader T20 reset.

Possible outcomes include:

  • New T20 captain
  • Revised selection policy
  • Reduced reliance on senior players
  • Youth infusion ahead of the next cycle

The quote attributed to a source via PTI suggests Naqvi was “not happy at all” after assurances from selectors and management that the team was well-prepared.

That signals frustration not just with players, but with the entire system.

What Does This Mean for Pakistan’s T20 Future?

Pakistan has historically been a formidable T20 side, including a World Cup win in 2009 and multiple deep tournament runs.

But recent campaigns have highlighted recurring issues:

  • Inconsistent batting approach
  • Middle-order instability
  • Overreliance on individual brilliance
  • Tactical rigidity in pressure matches

If the board follows through on a structural overhaul, the next T20 cycle could mark a generational transition.

TL;DR

  • PCB has reportedly fined each Pakistan player PKR 5 million.
  • The penalty follows a Super 8 exit at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
  • Captain Salman Ali Agha and senior players, including Babar Azam, face uncertainty.
  • Head coach Mike Hesson is also under scrutiny.
  • A wider T20 restructuring may follow.
