US Open 2022: Serena Williams won't reconsider retirement but, 'you never know'

Serena Williams on Friday stated that she will not reconsider her decision to retire but, added “you never know”. Read to know more on the ongoing US Open 2022 and the star’s plans.

Serena Williams retires from Tennis

On Friday, Tennis superstar Serena Williams stated she will not be reconsidering her decision to retire from tennis but, added that “you never know”. In the court, she was asked a tearful “Will you reconsider?” To this, Williams stated, “I’m literally playing my way into this and getting better. I should have started sooner this year. I don’t think so, but you never know”. Williams suffered a ‘career-ending defeat’ after being knocked out of the US Open 2022 by Ajla Tomalijanovic from Australia. However, twice in her career, she held all four majors at the same time. The 23-time Grand Slam winner lost her third round with a 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 6-1.

Williams was overcome with emotion during her interview in the middle of the court. “I thank everyone that’s here, that’s been on my side so many years, decades. Oh my gosh, literally decades,” said Williams. “But it all started with my parents. And they deserve everything. So I’m really grateful to them. And I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t [sister] Venus, so thank you, Venus. She’s the only reason that Serena Williams ever existed,” she added. Almost everyone rose to their feet as she departed the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. She waved goodbye along with her signature Twirl.

On US Open 2022 and more

The 41-year-old played her last game in the US Open 2022 which may be the last game of her wonderful career. “I’m ready to, like, be a mom, explore a different version of Serena. Technically in the world, I’m still super young, so I want to have a little bit of life while I’m still walking,” stated Williams when asked what she planned on doing. While she is hoping to remain involved in tennis in some capacity, spending time with her 5-year-old daughter, Olympia was a priority. Williams’ career in tennis had been “really hard” on the child. “It’s been really hard on her, my career. So it will be nice just to do that and spend some time with her, do things that I never really have done or had an opportunity to do,” explained Williams.
