Meet Abidur Chowdhury: The Apple Designer Behind the Slimmest iPhone Yet

A “Piece of the Future” in Your Hand

Apple has introduced its slimmest iPhone yet, the iPhone Air, at a launch event in Cupertino, California. Marketed as a leap forward in smartphone design, the device is a third thinner than previous models and wrapped in a titanium frame.

Priced at $999 in the US, the iPhone Air features a single telephoto camera enhanced by artificial intelligence and battery-saving software that promises all-day performance despite its smaller battery.

“It’s a paradox you have to hold to believe,” said Abidur Chowdhury, the Apple industrial designer who helped shape the new iPhone.

Who Is Abidur Chowdhury?

Chowdhury, born and raised in London and now based in San Francisco, has been with Apple since 2019. He describes himself as someone who “loves to solve problems and learn new things” and is driven by creating products people “can’t bear to be without.”

Education and Early Career

  • Graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Product Design and Technology from Loughborough University.
  • During his studies, won major awards including:
    • 3D Hubs Student Grant for Product Design
    • James Dyson Foundation Bursary
    • New Designers Kenwood Appliances Award
    • First place in the Seymour Powell Design Week competition
  • In 2016, received the Red Dot Design Award for his “Plug and Play” design.

Professional Journey

  • Interned at Cambridge Consultants and Curventa in the UK.
  • Worked as an Industrial Designer at Layer Design in London.
  • Founded Abidur Chowdhury Design (2018–2019), a consultancy that collaborated with agencies, startups, and innovation-driven companies.
  • Joined Apple in January 2019 as an Industrial Designer in Cupertino, contributing to some of the company’s most cutting-edge projects — including the newly announced iPhone Air.

Inside the iPhone Air

The iPhone Air breaks with Apple’s traditional design approach. Its engineering relies on a restructured camera plateau that houses the telephoto lens, chipset, and system modules. This freed up internal space for a high-density battery, allowing for a balance between slimness and longevity.

Key features include:

  • Thinner, titanium body: Roughly one-third slimmer than earlier iPhones.
  • AI-powered photography: Smart algorithms improve photo quality with a single-lens setup.
  • Battery optimization: Software enhancements offset the reduced battery size for all-day use.

The iPhone 17 Series Joins the Lineup

Apple also revealed the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, positioning them as the flagship successors to the iPhone 16 lineup.

Highlights of the new series:

  • Apple A19 Pro chip for faster performance and energy efficiency.
  • Enhanced camera systems across models.
  • Larger displays with improved color accuracy.
  • Expanded storage options and new color variants for the Indian market.

Pre-orders are expected to open in India shortly, marking another key rollout for Apple in one of its fastest-growing global markets.

Why It Matters

Apple’s iPhone Air isn’t just a thinner phone — it’s a statement of design ambition. By balancing aesthetics, performance, and durability, the company is signaling its intent to keep pushing the limits of what a smartphone can be. For Chowdhury, the London-born designer behind its look and feel, the launch is also a career milestone that cements his role in shaping Apple’s next generation of devices.
