Scientist in Japan invents lickable TV screen that can imitate food flavors

In the list of most bizarre inventions, there is a new edition – ‘lickable tv’. We have all read or seen something really absurd but have you ever thought about tasting a TV? Wondering what motivates people to go out and invent something weird, this Japanese professor went all wild to create a lickable TV that will taste good. This TV screen can imitate food flavours and is being marketed as another step toward a ‘multi sensory’ viewing experience.

This type of technology, according to Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita, can improve people’s connections and interactions with the outside world in the COVID-19 era. Reuters quoted the professor saying, “The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home.” Miyashita works with a group of students who have created a variety of flavour-related devices, including a fork that enhances the flavour of food.

The lickable TV device is known as Taste the TV. It comprises a carousel of ten flavour canisters. That spray in tandem to create the flavour of a specific food. The flavour sample is then copied onto hygienic film. And placed in front of a flat TV screen for the viewer to try. According to the professor, people who want to organise tasting games and quizzes, as well as sommeliers and cooks learning through distance education, would be the potential customers.

He also hopes to create a forum where users can download and appreciate flavours from around the world. It is identical to how music is now. One student illustrated lickable TV for correspondents, saying she wanted to taste sweet chocolate. After a few trials, an automated voice recited the order, and flavour jets sprinkled a specimen onto a plastic sheet.
